So I got this car less than a month ago and the only thing wrong was a few dings and these rust spots. He said someone swiped him about a month ago and he lives in SF about a mile away from the ocean so it started rusting. It doesn’t look bad at all and I was going to let it be until i looked at some of the horror stories here on G2ic. I was wondering if I should
A. Act Now or else it’s over
B. Save until i got a good amount of money and do it.
C. It’ll be fine for now…
Is this something I can do myself with a walk through or should i pay a shop for sure? There are also some tiny rock chips maybe .5mm big that are rusted. Couldnt’ get a picture cause they’re so small but should i get those fixed too? Thanks for the help
That doesn’t look bad at all. It just looks to be surface rust at the moment. However, if you leave it as is the rust will spread and start bubbling the paint around the damaged areas.
I’d say some form of immediate repair is in order. At the very least I’d suggest cleaning up the areas and hitting them with some paint as a preventative measure.
yeah, that looks very minor. With a little common sense, imagination, and reading up on body work books in the library and bookstores, you should be able to save yourself some coin and come-up with a job that’s up to your standards.
Thanks for the replies. I’ll look into it and try to do it later this week. Any suggestions on how to get started, or any teg help tip links? when you guys say DIY you guys are talking about removing rust only right? if I want it repainted this areas too large for a touch up that I can do myself?
That surface rust should be easy to take care of. here’s how I’d do it:
Buy a Wire Wheel, a fine haired Paint brush, Por15, Por15 Marine Clean, and some filler primer at your local auto parts store.
Attach the wire wheel to a normal power drill and grind off the top level of rust with the wire wheel. Take off the paint around the rust until you hit un rusted metal all the way around the rust spot. don’t remove all of the rust as the Por15 will actually chemically bond to the rust and neutralize it. it works better if you leave the top layer of rust in place.
After grinding, wipe all of the exposed metal and surrounding paint clean with marine clean.
Brush on the por15 over the entire exposed metal surface.
Allow the por15 to dry for about an hour, it should be tacky at that point
Spray a light dusting of filler primer over the por15, just enough that it turns the por15 a dark grey color instead of the black that it is initially. the reason for doing this is to get the paint to bond with the por15 while its still sticky, but you don’t want to completely cover the por15 or it will never dry properly.
After 2-3 hours the por15 should be completely dry, you can then apply primer and base/clear as normal to the repaired area, or if you’re feeling lazy at this point buy some touch up from the dealer and brush it on.
With the por15 in place that area should never rust again. Its pretty incredible stuff.
now thats rust, ya what mucter said I had rust in the exact same spot as you a little bit worse though and I did just that, don’t know what por15 is though I think any metal treatment will do. but ya its fairly easy it makes you wonder why they charge so much at body shops unless of course your car looks like this one.
