I recently picked up an AEM “Tru Power Pulley Kit” brand new on ebay for around $100 shipped for my '93 GS-R.
As can be expected with AEM products, the finish was excellent, as was the packaging. It came with the power steering pulley, the alternator pulley, a new belt for each, generalized instruction manual, and 2 AEM stickers. In comparison to the stock pulleys, they are a little lighter, a bit bigger, and look a lot better.
The install proved to be a pain in the ass, which was fault of AEM, myself, and a 10 year old car. The first problem I ran into was that I found out the hard way that the bolt holding the power steering pulley to the pump was a reverse thread. After breaking the bolt, I was lucky enough to have a friend get the remainder of the bolt out of the pump. Next I discovered the lower alternator bolt was seized… this of course caused another trip the Acura dealer for parts. The last of the problems was by far the most annoying. When the AEM alternator pulley was tightened all the way, it rubbed against the alternator. When compared to the the AEM pulley, the center of the stock unit stuck out a bit farther to prevent this rubbing. This sent me looking all over town for a washer that would fit. I finally found one that I got to fit after grinding it down with a dremel.
I installed these pulleys at the same time as a number of other mods, so I will not be able to give any defineate reviews on performance increases, however I will say that the poorly designed product, high price, and possible negative effects on the alternator are probably not worth the minimal HP increases this product will give you.
I’ve had mine on my car for about 2+ years and they never gave me a problem. The bolt on the alt pulley was definately hard to get off, but I did notice some gains. The steering was “easier” and the rev’s were quicker.
Only thing to watch out is that since you have a larger pulley on the alt, this will not make the altenator turn that fast during idle, so you can see a significant dimming and brightening if you have all your accessories and headlights on.
I have the stock pulley on the alt now because my altenator finally went out after 195,000 miles.
I have a set for sale right now too if anyone is interested. email me rcnacura@aol.com since I’m getting rid of my car I don’t need these anymore.
Thanks for the review it was extremely informative. I actually bought some Bseries AEM pulleys at NOPI nationals and just got the time to try and put them in the other day. I ran into a problem though, the belt on the stock power steering pulley is about half the width as the supplied one. So has anyone ran into this problem? I checked the number on the box and the fool sold me pulleys for a 94+ integra but it still should be compatible i believe. Any feedback would be great. thanks.
I’m curious wheather it there is a product number on the pullies themselves
I caught a guy selling pullies and he had a whole bunch of empty AEM boxes and would just repackage his left over sets like the Integra set he tried to pawn off as the EF set
I would contact AEM about your fitment problems and perhaps you can work something out, there rep especially now as they expand beyond sport compact world is worth it’s weight in gold so I’m sure they will be helpfull
