im just wondering if these are a waste of money or worth it? how do they increase horsepower?

The pulleys are larger diameter than that factory ones, and lighter weight. The theory is that the larger pulley requires less force to rotate it. Like a larger steering wheel on a car with no power steering. You have more leverge to turn it so it is easier. Same idea on the pulleys. Less engine power is needed to rotate the power steering and alternator. The trade off is that the pulleys will be turning a slower RPM, but AEM made sure that your accessories still work fine at the new RPM.
Are the gains worth the price? probably not, but you do get some kick-ass looking parts to bolt on.
By the way, the kit comes with new belts that are properly sized for the larger pulleys.

add maybe like 2 horsepower. I have them on my car.
