affect on dampers when changing springs

I have been told by some that changing springs while using the same dampers can cause the dampers to not perform as well with the new springs- maybe due to that the dampers are used to traveling certain distances and speeds and then a new set of springs will change that. Is this true? I guess some first hand knowledge would be best on this. I am going to purchase some koni yellows and currently have some ground control coilovers but will definately be purchasing some stiffer springs in the near future. I dont want to mate these dampers with the ground controls if it means once I change out the springs the yellows will not perform correctly. Thanks guys

hey, ive got some skunkworks coilovers that have a higher spring rate than the ground controls. They are 500lb front and 400lb rear. Let me know if you would be willing to trade straight up. cuz i am!

What you said is true. Honestly, I’m not the one who uses the shock dyno so I can’t give an exact answer, but in a general sense, yes, a spring damper’s performance can improve or worsen depending on spring rate. I assume you have taken physics before so you should know about spring damping relating to the spring constant(in addition to piston velocity etc…). Now, for a more practical answer that you can use, I am running Koni Yellows with GC coilover sleeves and 380lb/in f 450lb/in r Eibach ERS(basically a decent compromise between streetability and handling). So far, after a good bit of testing, I am very pleased with the yellows. I plan to put the car on cornerweight scales either tomorrow or sometime in the coming week. How high are you planning to go with your spring rates? Perhaps you can look around and find some dyno information on the shocks and make an educated decision off of that.

well I’m looking at 350-450 in f and 450-550 in rear- i think thats the range from the personal experience I’ve gathered from peoples current setups. Also, do oyu know what drop the GC’s give you if the sleeves are not used?? Wondering cuz i never thought of keeping the sleeves to use on the ERS springs- thanks for bringing that up  - and if I’m going to sell the springs that were with the GC’s what could i tell a potential buyer the height change would be??

thanks for the reply

The Eibach Springs I put in my car were substantially shorter than the stock springs, so short, in fact, that with the stock perches, I don’t think they clear the top of the shock body by more than 2 or 3 inches. I am pretty sure the sleeves are a necessity, or the car would be either contantly on the bump stops, especially in the rear.

You still need to test that exit ramp on 85N up by Sugar Loaf! (The one we took the SVT Focus on)

That would be nice, although I have found a few ramps around here as well. Steady state is nice but where it really shines compared to before is in the transients, such as the slalom I set up at 1 in the morning in the ME school parking lot to decide where I wanted my settings.

thanks dood- and hey i hate to whore on my own thread(like that hasnt happened b4 hehe) but if I could get your advice on this I would greatly appreciate ithttp://www.g2ic.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37205
