I haven’t seen this article posted on these boards, so I figure I’d educate some of you folks (including myself). I’ve been looking around for some hard evidence on this kind of stuff. And voila! Here it is. Albeit, it’s not a be all, end all answer, it’s enough to convince me to stop buying aftermarket lights (Eurolites, PIAAs, etc.). I guess the good thing I can see about it is that I didn’t buy PIAAs and settled with something cheap (Eurolites). Oh well, back to good ol’ Stanley for me

P.S. Yes, I know some people have discouraged us before and will probably say “I told you so”, but I really wanted some irrefutable test that will prove me wrong. And this is Overboost for crying out loud. They’re suppose to praise the name of PIAA
now, do you really care if you can’t see half as good going down the road at night as long as your car looks like it has some very expensive HID headlight like those expensive european cars? Knowing that you only paid 25.00 Canadian for them?
they all tested like generation 1 and 2 fakies, they should of tested the newere generations like the plazma (4) and also Krypton (5).
i can swear by krpton being alot brighter because i buy alot of these for myself and my friends and i alwayse let them see their products by comparing it side by side with stock and it kills it.

Well, i just put the fogs on or high beam the road if i can’t see. Although, that’s not good during a blizzard or fog. Hopefully, I would have sold my Teg before I get out on a road like that and go on a business trip or something.

P.S. How did you know I paid $25Cdn. for my Eurolites?

I don’t think it matters if the newer generation bulbs were tested since they share common principles: the fact that the bulbs are usually tinted and/or have different gases than halogens and real HID’s. This was an old article anyways. Also, you are going by a visual judgement rather than accurate Kelvin measurements.

Yes, I do care if I can’t see HALF as good down the road at night because I have TWICE the chance of getting into a wreck! It’s not always about looks. “Form follows function” was the Bauhaus motto.
Here’s the main point of the article: “…the tint in the bulb glass does the same thing tint on your passenger compartment glass does – lets less light through.”
I was looking around PIAA’s web site yesterday, and I find it strange that they rate their bulbs as SAE, DOT, or STREET LEGAL (or not legal at all by omission of rating) and then at the bottom of the page state that the bulbs are not to be used as headlights.
Sounds like they are holding their customers at arms length to eliminate lawsuits from problems caused by the product.

Yes, the lights are not as bright…no, it wasn’t a big change.
I can see fine with them, maybe it’s a florida thing. They aren’t as bright as my stock bulbs, but they are bright enough to see at night.
that sounds like a reasonable statement. i think if you live in generally nice weather areas like cali, florida, etc, then the small loss in visibility won’t hurt you… but in real snowing and rainy, foggy places, i think the stock bulbs actually give better visibility IMO
My own conclusion is for people with the clear lens (like G3 Tegs and 92+ Preludes), with the reflector doing the work, the cool blue are cool. The pattern is also better controlled.
But for older headlamps, like G2s, where the pattern is controlled by the textured (not clear) lens, the look isn’t as great.
As for the brightness thing, I don’t think they are any brighter than stock, just whiter.

do you compare the headlights as you look at them, or the light on the road? i live in cali where the weather is good, but im more concerned about the rarer wet days where even stock light is difficult to see.
in rainy, wet, snowy days all i know is my rain X will pick up any slack that my krypton bulbs left off. I have no probvlems seeing the road in rainy, web, snowy days as long as i turn on my krpton fog lights that are rateed 130 watt output which is higher than my reg headlight which is 110. i compare them by looking at them and on the road and it’s not just me. it’s all my friends that tells me to get it for them. they all have agreed that there visibility have increase dramatically.
remember i only stated krypton bulbs i cannot say the same about others. for those with kryptons bulbs and you think i’ts dimmer than stock than maybe i will think twice.
