Just put in axles from NAPA, and my driver’s side i was a little careless, decided to hammer it in (don’t hate, i know it’s wrong). So now the boot has a tear in it and it’s given a small click, but that could be from the busted springs. Have any of you guys bought new CV boots like from jcwhitney to replace torn ones? NAPA has a lifetime warranty on the axles but if i bring it back in three days they may figure out it was my fault… The boots would only cost $17 plus shipping
usually replacement boots just wrap around the axle and in no way would pass as the originals if your plan is to return the axle. Also the source of your click isn’t because the boot is torn either. A completely torn boot can be quiet…the joint will only click if the actually joint was damaged. The bad thing about torn boots is all the grease likes to fly out and rocks/dirt/debris can get in there and damage the cv joint.
The sound you are hearing may be your wheel bearing…if you pound to hard trying to get it back together…you can damage the bearing. good way to check is to jack it up and then grab it at the 6 and 12 oclock position and try to wiggle it…if it wiggles…the bearing is damaged.
What do you mean you hammered it in? You didn’t hammer it into your intermediate shaft did you? Ouch…(poor tranny).
A clicking can be from many things, but axles (especially Napa and the like) are often the source of blame. Your torn CV boot has nothing to do with the axle clicking (assuming it is the axle. You just installed the axle a few days ago and a torn CV boot allows debris to damage the joint over a significant period of time. Your CV joints were already broken (I hope that doesn’t happen with my new rebuilt axle), or your silly hammering broke the joint.
However, Napa and stores like Autozone usually exchange axles no questions asked, so you shouldn’t have a problem returning them.
yes, i hammered it into the intermediate shaft. I’m an idiot, but i sure as hell won’t do it again. I’ll just take the axle out when i put my suspension in and get another one probably
