Air Duct Idea

Has anyone made a air duct for track duty for their DA? I am thinking of doing one in place of the passenger side fog but not sure how to go about it. I have a extra headlight to play with though.

Are you working with the 90 - 91 or the 92 - 93 bumper?

92-93 any help?

i will be attempting something similar very soon, like this:
http://passwordjdm.com/PasswordJDM-Dry-Carbon-Fiber-Bumper-Ducts-92-95-Civic-23dr-P4681C428.aspx

i am going to make one out of carbon, for the right lower duct, below the bumper light. it will then be ducted in & up to my filter assembly. i havent seen these before for our cars, and if i can get it to look halfway decent, i plan on doing a small batch for sale. will keep posted.

I could be mistaking however I really think mi_da_dc_eg is talking brake cooling ducting here not intake.

The efficiency of a front wheel drive brake cooling system will always be limited by the placement of the drive axels and the inability to direct cooling air into the center of the brake rotor.

If you are class competing you will likely not be legally allowed to modify or create turn signal openings.

If you are track day “competing” get some 2.0/2.5" silcon brake duct hose like this http://www.ducting.com/BDS.html plan you’re routing and mounts and go to it. Al. flat bar, zip ties and bridge clamps are your friends.

I use the JDP “Spoon” style front lip with brake cooling duct/openings incorporated into the lip and a splitter below the lower edge of the lip.

I’ve been wanting to make one to replace the 92-93 bumper lights, it’s probably at the very bottom of my very long “To Do” list for the car so I’ll probably never get around to it, but still, something I think about often. Keep us posted on what you come up with.

Marc, do you have any pics? I don’t like that lip, but imagine my opinion could change if I saw it in a practical road race application opposed to just high school kid’s cars.

Sorry Colin I don’t at the moment, I am not a huge fan likewise.

SCCA EP rules dictate no poking holes in the front bumper or until I can get Kiwi/SPMS to finish the splitter for our cars the JDP lip is what we have.

Rules are such a funny thing like that. You can’t put a hole in the bumper, but you can add something to the bumper with a hole in it… I haven’t read too many rulebooks (especially regarding aero/ducting/body mods) since I’m not in the position to do anything competitive with my car, but you said they usually don’t like messing with the bumper lights and trying to use those holes? Cause that just seems like it’d work so well. Although I haven’t investigated how the routing would work behind and if there’s enough room back there.

For lapping days, the turn signal opening is the logical location to work with.

Gut turn signal housing, attach some hose and go.

However for a lapping day do you really require brake cooling? Sounds a bit competitive to me?

Yeah, probably not something needed, but I can see my brakes getting quite hot. I’ve only took the car out on two events thusfar. Everything was OK, but brakes were getting pretty hot, and I only see myself getting faster as both I and the car improve. More than anything I’m just a car nerd who likes to work with my hands, I like projects like that (just wish I had more time for them) so there are a lot of things I think of and would like to do but get pushed to the bottom of my to do list since they’re really not needed.

I was actually talking air ducting for the intake system lol

Yeh WAY TC from nzhondas.co.nz made one for his DA. Im also in the process of making one will post some pics later of how im going about it

Yes it has been done… mine is a 1991 so I have the extra hole under the turn signal…

I have been running it for quite some time now too  The scoop completely seals the opening, so unlike just sticking a hose there, the air has no where else to go but into the funnel

I should also add that my scoop cost all of $18… beats the sh$t out of that $150 thing from PWJDM…

This one is high on shipping, but you should get the idea of what to search for to see others.

The “only” thing in the way is the bumper beam. Depending on rules, you can just “trim” away the part blocking the path. You can look at the pic of my 91 bumper:

The little hole above my scoop is the hole through the bumper behind the turnsignal. I don’t foresee the 92+ being much different. You can just open up that hold a little with a saw/plasma cutter or just MOOOOOSH some hose through it.

here are a few pics of the first attempt. this first iteration is more of a conceptual trial, just to see if it is doable. it is only single layer carbon, and is extremely flimsy, albeit very light. the first attempt didnt come out too bad, and i learned from it.

the 2nd attempt piece is curing as i type this, and i stepped it up to 3 layers of fabric, and used a vacuum bag as well. it should be much better. the rest of the plan is to fabricate a 2nd part that will slip fit over the end of the first part (behind the bumper similar to the above pics), and end in a tube shape (2.75" or 3" not sure yet). from there, i will run flexible ducting up to the filter.

pulled the 2nd prototype out of the vacuum bag & mold (bumper) today. cleaned up the excess resin from the bag pleats, sanded smooth, & started to clear coat it. came out much better w several layers of fabric (3). hopefully have some pics up soon of it actually ON a car, as i gave this 2nd version to Irishkid to fit on his car.
will start next version this week, with much better vacuum bag ( stretchier), peel ply & breather material. hopefully will require less finish work after pulling from the mold. also will use better planned fabric orientation during the layup schedule. pics to come.

are you making these with a male or female mold?

maybe I can help you make these look really awesome. I like the work so far, but I have some info that could make these really top notch products

-94mark3: received your email, will reply tomorrow.
-isport: I am making these (so far) with an actual bumper as the mold. I guess that would be a female type mold? I would love to hear your input & ideas! I am planning on buying some better vacuum bagging supplies tomorrow, peel ply, breather, and a stretchier bag material. Where do you get your supplies from? I was going to use one of the online composite sites… Thanks - bryan
