Alternate entry to hood?

I know this sounds shady on the dealers part, but im looking at a 91 ls and the dealer said he couldnt show me under the hood because the latch/cable was broken. Thats an automatic red light saying leave the car where it is, but it has a decent body and Id like to get it if it has a decent engine. If the latch is broken, could I have him remove the bumper or fender well to access the latch?

He did say I could test drive it but thats another story. I need to lay eyes on this engine to make sure im not getting an absolute dud.

Thanks

Be careful when doing something like what you are wanting to do. I say this because a neighbor or someone could see you messing with it and they will call the cops. Or, the car could have an alarm, and one mistake could set it off.

I agree totally, but this will be done on a dealer lot with permission from the dealer.

ummm… ok… Anyways…

Depends where the cable is broken. If it’s broken at the lever inside the car, or at the latch.

If it’s broken at the lever under dash then you can get to it just by removing the plastic trim around the lever. Or you can get to it by removing the plastic liner under the driver’s fender (Hence my “relocating the hood release cable” writeup inthe teg tips.) but to open it from unde the fender, you need to cut the cable so you can get to and pull the metal cable inside the sleeve.

I believe if you raise the car on a lift, you could climb under it and reach up between the manifold and radiator and pop the latch with your fingers or a clothes hanger bent into the right shape hook. but you’d probably have to look at another teg (one with a hood that opens) so you see the little lever that the cable pulls on. that way you know what you are feeling for and which way to pull it.

Now on a completely seperate note… If the hood doesn’t open, how long has it been since that car has an oil change or any kind of Maintenance. are we to believe it JUST broke???

Wow, this is true. Im definitely bringing that up. I have a perfectly healthy B18 and tranny at home but I dont want to give this guy 1500 basically for a shell with dents.

Thanks for the advice
