It seems like everyone here has replaced their alternator at least once, I just finished having mine done. I just wanted to know how much you guys paid for the part. The part cost me $304 (CAN) which I thought was absurd for an alternator and this was a rebuilt one too. The total bill came to $563 (CAN)…I dunno I just feel like I got raped with a pole.
most of the times failures occur when the brushes inside the alternators are worn out. Universal brushes can be purchased at NAPA for about $5 US and you can do the install yourself. There should be a teg tip about switching out the brushes (its fairly simple). It would have save you alot of money if you were to check first before purchasing a newly rebuilt alternator.
If you were to buy a rebuilt alternator from a parts store here, it would be about $160US after the core refund. Installation might be costly and difficult for some, but there is a very easy way for it to be done and it can be found in the teg tips to do it.
mine went out this past august while i was on vacation in Houston. picked up a reman. from O’Reilly’s down there and it was only like $60 after the core charge was removed, bought new battery which was like $80 and had a little shop my brother-in-law knows install everything, total came to $320 installed.
my alt went out because i was stupid and left my lights on at a rest area on the way down, fell asleep for a couple hours and car was dead. got a sheriff to jump me and just let the alt charge it back up from dead, the alt. died a week later on I-45 on my way from I-10 & 6 to The Woodlands. I barely made it to my bro-in-laws place where she pretty much completely died when i pulled into the driveway.
Yeah I guess I should have looked around before I just did it…but I figured an alternator wasn’t a huge job and it would be pretty cheap anywhere…last time I’ll do that.
want an extra im selling one int he forums for 20 bucks, i had it tested at autozone. it has 30,000 miles on it. i already have an extra here. i dont want to pay that high price for a rebuilt one.
