Can someone help me name the wire/part above the alternator that must be replaced here, or direct me to a place that would have this information?
Do you mean the rubber boot that is covering the wire? You should be able to find a generic, but suitable, replacement at a local autoparts store. They are also available online, something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008ASXN30/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 These are the ones that I ordered when I re-wired my engine bay. Ended up using them in a handful of different locations.
If you’re talking about the wire itself… it’s integrated into the wiring harness, so if you want to replace the whole wire you need to remove the harness, de-loom it, replace the wire, re-loom and replace the harness. You might be able to put a new ring terminal on the end of the wire while it’s still on the car but there’s not much room in that area.
I was talking about the wire in the harness, but good looking out with the boot link I will purchase some of those tonight.
I sort of assumed that I would have to purchase an entire harness setup with the wires already in it… I am new to this so if that is stupid just ignore it. If I were to replace the wire, how do I “de-loom” the wire once the harness is removed?
Edit: Nevermind, I was told what “de/re looming” is. I would rather not do that, so is there a way to purchase the entire piece, or if not what gauge of wire would I purchase as a replacement? Also where does the wire end on the other side?
Why do you want to replace that wire? If it’s not broken then I’d just leave it be, doesn’t seem to be worth the effort to replace it. Although it may be a good idea to try and clean it up a bit to get some of the corrosion off. Also, in case you weren’t aware, here’s a pic of an example of an engine wiring harness - the wire you’re asking about is loomed with all of these wires so taking this apart and replacing the wire is a bit of a chore. Not difficult work, I’ve torn a handful of these apart and “rebuilt” them, but it’s a decently big project if you’ve never done anything like it before.
I’m pretty sure that the wiring harnesses are discontinued from the dealer and even if they were available the price would be $300-$400 which I’m assuming you do not want to pay. You could always find a used one though.
If it does need to be replaced and you don’t want to remove the old one from the harness you could just add a new wire and keep it outside of the harness. This would be pretty simple as all you’d need to do would be to connect the alternator to the fuse box. Good quality 8ga wire should be sufficient - be careful because the cheap stuff often isn’t full 8ga in diameter. You could also use 4ga but getting the connector sized properly and fitted to the fuse box will be a bit of a challenge.
Fixed, thank you sir.
