So my alternator seems like its getting weak. and i was thinking about going to autozone and grabbing one. any complaints on alternator’s from them? Or if you have suggestions on what are good branded alternator’s and where to get them please let me know. thanks!
Well, when i had my civic the alternator went out on me. I got one from Kragen and not one day later, the thing went out on me. So i got my money back and went to auto zone. About 2 months later, thing went out on me. So i got my money back and went to Napa, never had a problem seance. IDK the name, but there about the same price as auto zone but are built off the OEM stranded.
USE A DENSO Altermator they the best and is what is OEM…
if your alternator is week your battery lite will be on the dash.
test the charging system first. battery may not be holding a proper charge
and yes, the only thing that will illuminate the batt light is an incorrect charging voltage
thats how it always is! honda>napa>auto zone>kragen
when you go to buy one you need to tell them you want a new one, not a reman. It will cost you a little bit more, but it is better than having to keep taking the alternator off and on ever time you have a problem. One way to test your alternator is start the car, let it run and disconnect the battery. If the car keeps running then the alternator is fine. If the car shuts off then you need a new alternator.
yeah my bro in law disconnected the batt and the car was still running. i dont get how the lights start dimming. its probably getting bad huh? h
your lights dimming doesnt necessarily mean that your alternator is going bad. My lights dim all the time when I am at a stop light and get brighter when I start to accelerate. Take it out and have it checked. A grounding kit will help the dimming light problem or just upgrade your grounding wires to a heavier gauge.
that “test” is extremely hard on the alternator. i wouldn’t suggest doing that again
during the winter you’re going to notice some dimming. this because the alternator has a high amount of load put onto it (defrost, heater, lights, stereo, etc…)
Just run a bigger ground wire from the valve cover to the frame of the car. Or replace the wires all together like Cerealkiller said. And welfare is correct, turn off everything before testing it like that as that test is only meant to test the alternator. Having everything on is going to overload it and it will/can blow.
.
oreilly auto parts is way better than napa or autozone by the way.

still not a good idea. by disconnecting the battery while the alternator is attempting to maintain charge, it can create a huge voltage surge. it has potential to fry components. i know it was an “old school” way of determining whether the vehicle was running mainly off the battery or not, but no competent technician practices this any more.
you can replace the brushes on a OEM alternator at a lot cheaper cost. that is if its the original alternator.
