another 404 question

i just put my new head p&p, crower springs, 404s, aem gears on stock ls bottom end. i know the 404 are supposed to lope at idle but approx how much? my car idles fine cold at about 1500 or so. but once warms up it surges from around 1000-2000. and i havent been able to set the timing. gears are set at 0,0 for now.

went out and messed with it this this morning. it definately seems to be timing related. was able to adjust timing and got rid of the surge but mark wouldnt line up. pulled jumper wire from timing connector and it came back but not as bad. if i had the head milled to up comp a bit do i need to move my gears? someone help

404’s are a beefy cam compared to stock, you need to be tuned to smooth it out. Some P30 or PR3 pistons would be the best way to get some decent compression.

i plan on getting pistons in the future. i just got tired of all my parts just sitting around in my shop. since i milled the head .020 and havent changed the gears could that be tricking the computer into “hunting” for the timing? and would a safc be a decent temp fix for some tunabilty? eventaully want to go hondata and obd1 conversion but money is tight right now.

i know 404s hare supposed to have a lope at idle. could the fact that im running them on stock compression be exaggarating that lope and im trying to chase a problem that really isnt there?
