Another Exhaust Question

Ok befor you all say search, I have a question that I have not found the An.
Is the mony spent om a cat-back worth it? Does it really make a difference in performance? I also do know the differences in the bends too. But is it worth $500 for a cat back. Looking to get the Greddy SP with Greddy headers. Let me know if this is a good chioce and if its worth the $$$$.

I can’t say I noticed a big difference in performance from just a cat-back, but that is with no other engine mods. My stock exhaust was rusted away, I picked up a Thermal for $200, cheaper than a new OEM system, so it was def. worth it. If you have other engine modifications the reduced restriction in the exhaust will help.

just wanted to clarify…
is it worth it compared to what?
OEM?
custom?
axel back?

My bad OEM and/or custom. Right now I have 2" pip with no cat or res. with a pro one muffler that I hate.

I would spend the money on a Cold-Air Intake first, then a header if you have a 90-91. I noticed the biggest improvement on my 91 with a DC header. I’m not saying that’s the best one to get, but the factory header on the 90-91’s is horrible. Also, the intake brings more air into the engine, allowing for more fuel, hence more power. I think your exhaust should be fine for now, and fine if you don’t have too many performance plans later. Your money is better-spent on a header or Cold Air at this time IMO.

I had DC headers on my last teg it was a 91 4dr gs. Im mainly wondering about the cat-back, if its worth the $$$

IMO not at the moment. Get other things first.

I kinda agree with this, and I kinda don’t. The bottom line here is that you’re probably not going to appreciate any noticeable gains until you get the ‘Big 3’ upgrades Intake/Header/Exhaust.

I would go into it not looking for the individual benefits of each, and whether or not one component is ‘worth it’, but consider the upgrades as a whole, and plan your purchases accordingly.

chsscott is right that you ought to have an upgraded intake, but I’m not convinced that it is the most important to do first. All an intake does is bring air into the engine more efficiently and with higher velocity, but if it can’t leave at that same efficiency, then what are you really gaining? Also, with the stock header and exhaust designs being what they are, I find it hard to believe your biggest restriction is in your intake, therefore it might stand to reason that your headers/exhaust are more crucial.

Again, the bottom line is that you really need to get all three, so do a lot of reading, and plan your purchases well for maximum gains. Get components (intake/header/exhaust) that work well with the car and with each other, and you’ll get the best increase in performance.

HTH

I have a Skunk2 IM and a airdynamic short ram intake. I am planning on getting the Greddy SP cat-back and headers in the next week from Nopi. Total price is like $900 with shipping. So we’ll see how much difference it makes and I know it will make some and have a good sound.

That should be a great combo. All you need now are some cams and cam gears.

I hear that man. Thats the next step after I get the rest of my brakes done and stiffen up the ride for autocross.

You said Greddy headers…s, as in plural??? Are you gonna get just the cat-back, or the entire exhaust? Because, if you mention a cat-back, then also mention a header you’re making me think you’re getting more than just cat-back. If JUST cat-back…well you’ll need it in the future so if you see a deal you can’t pass up now, get it. But, you’ll end up getting it anyways in the future, so it’s just a matter of when you get it. If full exhaust, yeah, it’ll make a difference, but it depends on what you already have done if anything. Like I said before, you’re gonna end up getting one anyways. It’s kinda pointless to do everything to your car, except the exhaust. But, you can hold off on it and get things that’ll make a more noticeable change now, like cams,cai/sri, maybe even some cam gears, etc…

I have other mods and I am going to order the Greddy cat-bck and Greddy header in the next week from Nopi. So far they have the best shipping rate and there stuff always gets to me within 3-4 days after placing the order.

After owning 2 catbacks now, I say Custom is probably the better choice.
You get the flexibility of making it look how you want and also meet your needs… it’s also cheaper

Thanks for the imput man. I have always had a custom job done on all 3 of my tegs.

I’m going to have to agree that custom is better as long as it’s mandrel-bent as far as price is concerned. I think the cat-back systems from companies sound better though on average.
