Just curious if any of you ran into synchro problems after using any type of short-shifter system. Please specify engine, tranny, shifter, shifter bushings, mileage of tranny, mileage of tranny while using short shifter.
Thanks,
Oz

yea i wonder same idea, ive heard about dc sports shifters cause the angle they put it at…wears some ish out
I’m running a Solo Shifter right now, and I think it’s a bit too much. I’ve been contemplating on going back to stock, or cut my Solo down a bit to lengthen the throw again.

Oz
yeah, i had this exact problem and im also goin back to stock. I have an OBX short shifter but kept the stock bushings. Before I took my car in to have it done (back when i was a n00b) my tranny shifted smooth and fine. about 2 months after i had the short shifter put in, it started grinding from 1st to 2nd. Plus, Im gettin really tired of the high-pitched rattle between like 1k-2k rpms in first gear. Very, very annoying even after takin the heat shield off.
Hopefully it doesnt grind anymore when i put the stock shifter in and it stops the freakin rattle.
I have heard though, that sometimes the reason why it tends to grind more often is because since it is a short throw, drivers tend to shift “harder”. dunno if that makes sense.

oh sorry and ive got a 92 LS (b18a). It had like 90k miles when i had the shifter put in. It is now at 105K miles and still grinding.
now, it doesnt grind all the time. seems to grind when im driving more aggressively (hence, shifting “harder”). but i dunno.

i’ve got a b&m short throw with ES bushings and i havn’t had a single problem, i’ve probly put 8k miles on it since. i took off the heat sheild also, once again no problems what so ever.
i have a B&M pro edge shifter (the $135 one) with ES shifter bushings. It’s been on the car for around 10k miles. I got 165k miles on my GSR YS1. I have cut/modified the shift rod, and removed ALL heatshields in order to get it to fit and clear my RSR catback (it barely clears even rite now cuz the throw is so short). I never grind gears and i recently pulled the tranny apart and all the synchros are perfectly fine. My driving style is easy on the synchros though, so maybe that’s why.
I think 50% of the rattling associated with this b&M is the plastic shift boot collar vibrating against the shift lever. After i put a piece of electrical tape around inside it, most of that annoying rattling stopped for good.
This shifter is very notchy (solidly defined gates), but actually i like it like that. If you miss a shift you’ll know instantaneously that something isnt right. This is one of the best non engine related mods i have done.

Same for me. Probably around 10-12k miles now with the same setup. My car has started grinding though when I shift quickly from 1-2. But that has more to do with the fact that I autocross my car whenever I get a chance. I wouldn’t go back to stock though.
BTW, it’s a 91 RS with basic boltons and a little more than 80k miles now.
I also have a B&M short shifter with prothane bushing, and no problems what so ever. doesn’t rattle, and I have had it in for about 2 months. I love it, I wouldn’t be able to drive with my stock one on, I’d be grind’n all day. I love my short throw, and hasn’t affected my trans…yet.
I use a DC Sport shifter and ES bushings…I think I put about 150K’s on it and it grinds like s**t. I lost first gear and reverse replaced about two years ago and might need to replaced again.
I have a DC w/ Poly bushings. I’ve had for 2 years (about 20K miles). B18A w/ stock tranny and 110K miles. No problems yet. I love it.

Solo Short Shifter, installed since December 29th, 2001. I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it.
I have the ebay special short shifter with a neuspeed stabilizer bushing and I don’t have any problems. I have a b18a w/105k miles on it. BTW I’ve had my short shifter on for about 8k miles.
i have an obx, only probs are
i’ve snapped 2 C’s short shifters… i must be too strong:lol: j/k
My Solo has been great. 1st in seldom a problem, but it sometimes it takes a few trys to get it in(very rarely).
What about skunk2 shifters
Are they good,safe,reliable???
Thanks,
Jay
been using DC s.s. for 5 months I think. No problems at all so far. At first I had trouble on getting used on shifting with the short shifter hated it, grinded a lot on the first month of using it. Its hard to get used of the very short throw shifting, but when I got used to it’s a hell lot of fun driving with it. Just take it slow when you first use it and when you get the hang of it you can gun it fast. And when I drove my friends 91 prelude si it felt weird shifting with it’s long @ss shifting.
i installed my b&M short shifter w/ e/s bushings about 2 months ago, it shifted fine up until recently it started to grind in 2nd gear… i love the stiff feeling that the es bushings give and the short throws make driving so much fun but i will go back to stock soon… seems like short shifters does wear out syncos faster than usual…
I’ll chime in…I have the generic short shifter from my local shop, the synchros definitely seem worse and double-clutching makes a noticeable difference. 2nd to 1st is the worst for me, 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd are smoooooth, sometimes 3rd to 4th is a little sticky. Gonna put in the DC when I find a place to work.
