I am having fun trying to replace the driverside engine mount. Supposed to be the easiest… The nut on the top is stripped and a socket just slides around it. It is in too tight of a space to put vice grips on or any kind of nut splitter. Anyone have any ideas of how to get this nut off?
get the gator grip!
yes the gator grip is key
I have a gator grip, but it will not work for something that is meant for a deep well socket. Thanks for the suggestion. I actually bought one just for that purpose, and found out those little pins only sink in about 1/4". Great for some, but not for all.
See if you can find some salvage sockets (I think that’s what they’re called, I forget exactly). You hammer them onto stripped nuts and bolts, and then use a wrench/ratchet/breaker bar to get the nut/bolt loose. They are basically sockets with teeth in them that dig into the nut/bolt when you hammer it on. Then the teeth allow you to get a grip on it. I believe sears sells some sizes. I’m not sure where else you could get them if the sears ones don’t fit.
that sounds like exactly what I need. I know a mechanic friend of mine had something like that but I haven’t seen him in a while. i will check sears out. Thanks
I’m not 100% sure on this one because it has been a while since I changed that mount, but I think that nut is welded to the mount. You have to loosen the bolt from the bottom.
:argh:
I just checked that. The bolt on the left has to be held at the bottom while the nut is turned on top, but the right one is a stud and that nut has to come off.
When I had problems getting the nut off the oil pan drain, because it was rounded… I used a pipe wrench… it has these teeth on it used to grip round lead pipes… when locked on to a rounded nut it digs into the head for a tite ass grip… works very well if the nut to be removed is in a similar location as the one on the oil pan… hopes that helps… UumM… maybe just a little…??.. ![]()
will a pipe wrench get to something in a somewhat tight spot? The engine mount bolt is not accessible by vice grips, I know that. I am not familiar with a pipe wrench, so I will have to check into it. Thanks for the idea.
A pipe wrench won’t work, if you can’t fit vise grips, then you can’t fit a pipe wrench. Here’s a link to one if you can’t remember what they look like:
You are right, that wouldn’t work. Oh well, next idea?? I still have not been able to locate those salvage sockets. Anyone else know another name for them? I am trying to get in touch with one of these snap on trucks but when you need them, they are hard to find.
I’m looking to see if I can find where to get the salvage sockets. I know craftsman used to have them at least, but I don’t see them on the site. Here’s a link to something else that might work, and I know you can get them at napa, and probably sears (where the link is from):
I am going to see it that stud remover will work. It looks like it will, as long as it fits in the tight spot. I will keep you posted.
