Anyone ever done a sunroof (moonroof) delete?

Yo, I was considering removing the moonroof from my car. I only have the little flip up glass. There are no water drain tubes either. I have searched this forum and couldn’t find anything.

It would think that the best way to do this would be to remove the moonroof by means of removing the glass and the framing. Then take a piece of sheet metal with the same thickness as the roof metal, and place it underneath the opening in the roof. Tack weld this panel in place from the bottom. There will be a small ridge where the moonroof hole and the sheet metal overlap. Then, apply a bit of body filler around the edges of the ridge. It should be apparent that there was once a moonroof, but it should look smooth as if it was an option from the factory to have a moonroof.

I suppose that this is one of the millions of possible ways to do this. Then you could get a headliner from an integra rsi which I don’t think came with a roof opening at all.

Well??? Is there a better way to do this???

I think this place seems like a good way to do it. Even if you dont buy from them, you could kind of copy their way of mounting the plate with the brakets and stuff.

it comes in the Carbon fiber as well as fiberglass like it says, so you could paint it or whatever, plus its lighter than metal.HTH!

…It may be hard to tell, but this car has no roof glass. Now, I have a dumb question. Are there some da’s without a roof glass???

p.s.- that hatch fits like crap on the rear left side. Look at the gap!

Integras didn’t come with a flip up glass, so that’s an aftermarket moonroof. Aftermarket Sunroofs don’t have any water draining setup. and they ALL eventually leak.

You mean that my integra once had no flip up roof, and that my flip up glass wasn’t a standard option? Are you sure??? I ask this because I am not sure.

If the dude that I bought my car from went and had an aftermarket glass installed in the roof, i’ll be sort of pissed off. I’m sitting around trying to figure out ways to lighten my car, and now I find out that my car was doomed the day I bought it, mainly because I could have potentially gotten an integra without a roof glass. WTF???

Someone else can confirm, but I’m 99.9999% sure integras did NOT have a flip up sunroof option. Only the sliding moonroof.

if anything check the glass on the sunroof. it should have the manufacturers name on a corner.

Should be the same as the other windows on the car - Manufacturer = ASAHI. The side windows are “tempsafe” (tempered) and the Sunroof should say “Lamisafe” (Laminated).

didnt the RS come without the roof option? does integreawow have an RS?

Yes, I’m guessing he has a “non-moonroof” RS and someone installed an aftermarket Flip up Moonroof in it.

:iagree:

I think when my B16 arrives, i’m gonna turbo that b##ch and not worry about the extra weight. Yeah, i’m a little pissed now, and the more that I think about it, the more that I get pissed off.

Overall, f##k a sunroof! There heavy, and visibility through them sucks. No wonder I scaled my car today and came up with 2520 lbs (truck scales). I mean, I figured that I would be farther below the 2560 lbs factory 91 RS curbo weight. However, I don’t know if the 2560 lbs factory curb weight rating is for cars with a sunroof or not. My theory is if you can’t outrun the civics, then join 'em in their own game. In other words, try to be as light as they are with out going completely insane on your car. I wanted to at least get equal with the RSi version in curb weight. Then again, f##k it, I think i’m going turbo. Maybe I will or maybe I won’t.

But honestly, does the factory curb weight for the 91 RS include a sunroof into its total?

integras ONLY had the sliding moonroof. According to the dealer literature you could only get the moonroof on the LS GS GS-R. BUT as I’ve said 100000 and 1 times the 90-93 was a fucking lego car and aside from the GS-R package ANY OPTION could be had on ANY trim level.

Flip up glass is aftermarket.

didn’t you remove your rear bumper support/beam? You’re right, I guess that doesn’t count as insane…

^^ or try to save a boatload of weight by taking away the sound deadening material.

4 Methods by which you can remove your sunroof:

  1. Remove the actual roof skin and replace with a non-sunroof roof skin. I haven’t seen anyone do this on an Integra, but here is the same exact process done on an 88-91 hatchback: http://www.performanceforum.com/wesvann/honda/roof/roof.html

Definitely a bit of work, but imo the best route since when you’re done its essentially like there wasn’t ever a sunroof on the car.

  1. Sunroof “Plug” Kit like was posted above.
    http://hondamarketplace.com/zerothread?id=1770017

  2. Roof “Cap”
There is a company out there making carbon fiber roof “caps” for Hondas, so far there isn’t a DA application, but eventually there probably will be. This cap just fits over the roofskin and essentially just covers the whole roof so the hole can’t be seen. The nice thing about this compared to the “plug” is that your roof is visually uniform w/o any mismatch of color or material.
http://hondamarketplace.com/zerothread/1696081 (btw, doing this purely as a visual modification, imo is lame… unless your roof is already all dented or super faded or something and you don’t plan on painting the car)

  3. Full Race Roof “Cap”
Made by the same company as above, but much stronger and meant to actually replace the roof skin as in the first option I posted. They say its pretty stiff, but how much extra rigidity it actually adds, I’m not sure. And I’m also unsure if there is any weight savings based on a factory metal roof skin. But my guess would be no.

I am planning on eventually getting rid of my sunroof and would like to go with option #1, however the other options may be a bit easier.

Too like this!

Nice Marc! I didn’t know that you had done this. I noticed that you cut out the roof supports as well (the ones that go side to side). did you have any trouble lining up the new roof? Seems that w/o those side to side supports the unibody might not retain its exact shape and stuff might not line up right, especially if the car was moved around or put on/off jackstands during the process. With that cage I’m sure the supports aren’t needed, but just seems like they may have helped keep everything straight until the cage was completely welded in place.

Seeing this really makes me want to do it!! I just need to source a roofskin from a junkyard and find some time to do it. Oh, and beef up my welding skills so I can actually make it work!

Is this a daily driven car???

Marc, question for ya… what was your method of sound deadening removal? I’ve been tempted to do mine, but it might be more time that would be better spent elsewhere.
