Are Type R valves that much better than B16 Valves?

I got a free set with the b16 that I bought and am debating installing them or not…is there any head work that needs to be done for this install? Also with type r springs retainers and cams what is safe for rpms on stock block? Thanks

Scott

I think that the difference in B16 and ITR valves is weight the ITR valves being lighter.

They are completely compatible. The valves, springs, retainers ect. Put them in if you have them, no headwork required!

Anyone know if it’s worth it to get ITR valves over P72 GSR valves? I’m putting in JDM ITR cams/springs in a '96 GSR head, should I go with the valves too?

jason-- DO NOT FORGET THE SKUNK2 MANI. get it now and get it over with. that stupid dual runner thing is a joke, just save yourself some time

on a lighter note, do you know a guy named lance? he came up to cincinnati last night ( i guess to see some girl ) w/ his friend Eelie ( prounoued EE-ly ) anyway, they said they’d come up in the next month or whatever, and i better see you with em! ha! you guys should get all those loisiville people up here and i’ll try to get all the columbus people down here. sound good? good luck w/ your b18c1 man, it’s gonna be wicked bad! --later

Yeah, I’m going to be sending the head out to Portflow within the next 2 weeks with the Skunk2 to have it port matched. They’re gonna install my JDM ITR cams/springs but I dunno if I wanna put in ITR valves at the same time or just stick with the GSR’s that have 60K miles on them.

Yeah, I know Lance, his car is a PIA! Took me 3 days just to change out the old axle that was ready to break last weekend. But it’s all good, we’re coo like dat.

If you want to set something up for a Cincy meet this summer I’ll help recruite some of the locals. I guess most of it would be up to you to find a meeting place and whatnot - for obvious reasons!

the itr valves have a smaller stem which acounts for its lighter weight, & theoretically allows additional airflow pass into the cylinder head. if you want to use them with your head you will have to machine new seats into the head to match the cuts in the valve.

if you have them, i say use them. but if you want to buy some valves, instead of the type-r ones, how about some flat top black nitride coated stainless valves? raises compression & same weight as a factory valve.

B16/gsr is on left, type r is on right.

B16 was 46.0, type r was 41.0

Excellent information, that’s actually what I was looking for. I’ll probably look into aftermarket GSR valves or just have these swirl polished and call it good enough.
