My transmission will sometimes make a loud whining sound instead of going into reverse. If I tap on the gas (did once by accident), the whining gets louder and quieter with the RPMs.
If I switch it to Neutral or Park, then back to reverse, the whining continues.
However, If I switch it to Drive, let it kick in, and then back into reverse, it will usually work fine after.
Any thoughts as to what is wrong with my tranny?
The fluid is a little over full, if that could be it
Does it happen after the engine is warmed up or only while it’s cold?
When was the last time the fluid was replaced?
Do the lights on the instrument cluster light up appropriately?
Cold usually, but it has happened once or twice warm
About a year and a half ago when I replaced my CV axles. I used the tranny fluid specified.
No. I haven’t had a single light light up since the engine light for my speedo cable early spring
I will be doing a 5 speed conversion next summer for sure. I have a '92 GSR tranny sitting in my garage, It’s just I won’t have the time or money to replace any worn synchros and do the swap until next summer
My biggest thing is that I need it to last until then. If I can fix this for $60 or less, I will. If it would cost more, I will dump in some trans-medic and hope it lasts until next summer. If it doesn’t, I’m using public transport it to uni until then
I’ve never had to change / add transmission fluid when I’ve changed my axles. I wonder if you have a bad seal somewhere. Did you use Honda ATF? Apparently you can use another transmission fluid for a short-term fix, but long term it’s better to use Honda ATF, especially when the transmissions get older.
Since you don’t see the transmission lights (2,S,D,N,R,P) :auto: light up, I’m also wondering if your shift brain is faulty, meaning that the car doesn’t know what gear it’s in. Take a look at the cold-weather fix here: http://forums.g2ic.com/showthread.php?154834-Automatic-Shifter-Problem-Due-to-Cold-Weather . Yours might actually be so dirty that it doesn’t matter what temperature it is outside. At least if you can clean it, it doesn’t cost anything and you can rule that out. Hope this helps!
I didn’t have to either, I chose to, as I had no idea when the last time the previous owner had, and I used Honda ATF.
I definitely have that cold weather shifter problem, so hopefully cleaning and dielectric grease help this as well. Which means now is the time to search how to remove the shifter.
Then comes the alternator and head gasket (small coolant leak).
'tis the world of early 90’s cars
