Auto Trans Problem

okay, so my problem started with the speedo bouncing badly and making all kinds of noise. upon inspection i noticed what i think is the speed sensor (the peice that the speedo cable plugs into at the top of my trans) had sheared off the tab which bolted it onto the trans therefore it was all loosy goosy in there. As a quick fix i just pulled out the speedo cable and the noise stopped and my car drove fine minus not having a speedo and my s3 light flashing. A few weeks later my trans began to slip and it is still doing this. The weird part is that when i turn the car on, i can drive for about half a mile with the trans operating flawlessly and then it begins to slip until every gear feels like neutral and my car is dead in the water. if i turn the car off and let it sit for about 30 secs then i can start the process over again and go another half a mile. Also it appears as tho the trans fluid level is too high. possibly the torque converter? My car is a 91 gs btw if that matters. My car has been parked for a couple months as i just cant figure this problem out.

If you haven’t already done so, put a speedo cable back on. Both tranny and eng ECU use a VSS signal for operation. If you still have the same problem, bad news…Your auto clutch packs are worn. Time for a new tranny or rebuild. Or you can do a manual swap.

i have a minty auto tranny in my car i am doin auto to manual conversion afterwinter if u still need a trany then hmu 8602024982

I will try to jimmy rig the speed sensor where it will stay in there. I have been trying to find a new speed sensor but nowhere seems to have one. all the auto parts stores say they dont even have a speed sensor for my car on their computer so i guess i will try and find one on ebay. Is it the same one in the manual and autos or are they different?

i think you’re having this problem: http://forums.g2ic.com/showthread.php?49599-Possible-TEG-tips-Speedo-cable-insert-lube&highlight=lube+speedo
pictures are 3/4 down the page.

look over it and see if it is indeed the problem you’re having. if not, sorry.

My problem is the tab which the bolt goes through that holds in the “power steering thingie” has sheared. Im not sure if it just got old or the speedo had no lube and caused enough stress to break it. My speedo never bounced or made any noise though until the tab sheared. Im going to do the fix in the write up after i get a new power steering thing and hope that fixes my trans issue

I think I have an extra vss in the garage. Ill give it to you if you pay for priority shipping.

what i would do is check the transmission codes.
next thing i’d do is drop the pan. see what’s in there. a small amount of light bronze shimmer is to be expected. larger flakes or a large amount of shimmer is excess clutch material and the transmission would need to replaced/rebuilt. if the fluid is black-ish, it’s usually an indication of a bad torque convertor. it does sound to me that the torque convertor is not supplying adequate pressure. especially since it happens in all gears and when the fluid becomes hot. typically, when fluid becomes hot, it’s flow characteristics are changed and pressure becomes reduced while flow is increased. could also be the pump seal.
regardless, i’d drop the pan and have a look at the bottom of it and the fluid. either way though, i have a feeling that the trannys toast. even though the torque convertor may have been the cause, the slipping will probably have taken off enough material for the clutches to not operated optimally.

No pan on the auto tranny.

^^my god, really? yeah i was just going by my very basic knowledge of an automatic transmission. well that sucks. i guess dumping the fluid is the only other viable method.

to the op, silly question; did you check the trans fluid level with the engine running? or not? hot? or cold?

Okay, so I fixes the power steering speed sensor and got ny speedo working correctly again but I still have the same issue with the trans slipping out of gear. The trans also makes a whining noise and doesn’t want to shift correctly fire the little time that it even moves at all. I checked the fluid in every circumstance you listed and it was high every time. Do I need a new transmission? If so I may as well do a manual swap.

dump the fluid and have a look at it.
also, check the tcm codes. regardless of whether the s3 light is flashing.
when you say “slipping”, you mean rpm increases without vehicle speed increasing? like in neutral? or do you mean it’s just not shifting gears?
could be a tcm issue as well

i printed up some testing procedures for the A and B solenoids, and diagnostic for the tcm. lemme know if you’re interested in trying them out.
but will need to know if the transmission is actually slipping or if it’s just not shifting

I would be willing to run the diag. It doesn’t want to shift till way too late in the rpms when it does move but it eventually slips out of gear entirely. Like it is in neutral in every gear except park. I have no lights flashing currently. Also, I drove it last when it was very cold and it seemed to drive a little longer maybe because the fluid was cold and thick?

unfortunately, it sounds like it is mechanical.
dump the fluid. have a close look at it. if it’s got excessive shimmer, the trannys probably toast. personally, i think the TC is leaking.
you can try refilling with honda atf or equivalent, but try adding a bottle of LUCAS trans-medic. i’ve tried it before on a baked tranny as a last ditch effort, and the thing shifted like butter after. worth a shot

thats a good idea, a lot better than replacing the trans
