I was looking at this section of the forums, and there is no Auto-X official thread or medium of discussing things about it.
So I wanted to start one.
I am new to auto x, so NEW I have not raced yet, never. But I am reading about it, and fixing the car so I can start next year.
Post pics of you at the races, or your car and mods and classification it belongs to.
Also, is there any auto exers in Miami, or south florida for that matter. I wanna know to with club do you belong so I can join there too. I was looking at Equipe Rapide.
When I get my car ready I will post pics and details…
good to hear a new comer… its really one of the best things in the world… so much fun… you’ll love it… i quit going to the racetrack casue going stragiht jsut dident appeal to me anymore… this is way more fun becasue its more your skill to get good times.
Equipe Rapide is essentially is the most popular S Fla auto-x body-- i’m sure u’ve been on the web site to see event days – usually @ homestead, hialeah, metro zoo… go by there and get it in your blood – it will make u put your car on there
The 2nd gen car is not really all that common to see at the autox. I have run over 200 events in the last 8 years and have seen only 3 besides my own.
This is last years pic (late season event)completeing a few shake down runs with the older setup. This years setup is quite a bit more stiff in spring rate. And has some more tune on the alignment settings to help it turn in a bit better.
We’ll see how well it can stack up against the type R, Mini, and WRX’s…
first event of the year is next Saturday…I’ll keep you posted…
Actually went quite OK…
Won the class by .084 seconds over my co-driver. Finished 12th in PAX out of 135.
The car was good…not great…Higher rear spring rates did wonders for the rotation of the car, adding the front sway bar made transitions much more predictable, but under power the front bar made the car push real bad… We’ll experiment with a higher rear tire pressure to gain some more rotation and hopefully the car will take an earlier and better set in the sweepers so we can get on the power and avoid the push.
We did not check tire pressures after each run as we would have liked. We were rushed in the run group and with 2 drivers, had to make 8 runs in an hour or so…
Looking back, we should have reset tire pressure and sprayed the tires to cool them in between runs…But who knew we were going to have 60f temperatures in Maryland in February!!
Next event is in a few weeks, we’ll try to make the changes and head out again. If the push does not improve, I’ll take some rear camber out of the car, and then try bumping rear pressures again…
Keep you posted…
The Nationally ranked STX guys were not at the event, so no one really to compare to, but really didn’t finish better than anyone noted Nationally in PAX so overall a “good” first event…Ron Bistrais was a trophy winner at Nationals last year in FS and STX should run exact raw times with FS…If you compare our times with Ron’s best, we were about .8 slower…If you factor in my fastest raw time (47.1 with a 2 second cone) this cone was a rocker (fell down/didn’t club it), so was a little over .5 seocnds behind Ron…this time would have been good for 10th in PAX.
Man, ive been trying to find a good set-up for my teg, i got some springs and shit but the rides not stiff enough for me. can you tell me what you set-up is. I want the stiffest ride possible.
Not necissarily your set-up just a general idea of a really stiff set-up.
i went to a local auto cross last month and i think im gonna run in the next one this month if i get my MC fixed in time. i took a couple pics while i was there and there was a g2 that i rode with that came in 3rd overall… i dont kno how but he was beating sti’s and vets… all he had was basic IHE and some springs.
heres his car
i learned a couple cool tricks from the guy to… he turned the stock auto seatbelts into a harness by locking them up and hitting the little box where it rolls up and then moving the seat forward. :ghetto: but it worked great
Our next one is this Sunday. I just run for fun but when I run in STS I usually do pretty well. I hate the way the car handles with the NT-450s I have on the street wheels so I’m thinking of running my track wheels with RA-1s and just running in Street Prepared. I really don’t care about my PAX anyway, so I might as well see what I can do with the R-Compounds.
Here’s me about 4 years ago with the porsche club of america.
I was in the X class, but it was never crowded (50 cars) and you got at least 12 runs. I was able to match times with half the boxters on street tires. I was running R-compounds though. I’m trying to get my wife to try her teg in a local event, and I would run my datsun roadster.
Hey dave22: I saw you out at that event pretty good runs. I will be out there tomorrow. I’m excited I just installed my poly bushings and I love the way it rides. I’m going for STS though. But I’ll see you out there. Bye the way dress warm it’s gonna be a cold one.
General setup info…A good place to start is with linear spring rates…Start with something around 400-500 in the rear and 500-600 up front…A lowering spring is a muti rate spring and will not give you a sold feeling of the car through any sort of transition. You need a really good shock (Koni’s or better) to control any spring rate over 500lbs WELL. Off the shelf shocks will work, but their life will be reduced and their effectiveness will be poor. …
Too soft a spring will create alot of transition push and not enough shock rebound creates that “bouncy” feeling…Try the rears as stiff as you can get on shock settings, and play around with the fronts until you get the balance the way you like it…Work DOWN from full stiff in the front…The car will push miserably at full front stiff, but with some adjustment, you’ll find something that works for you.
You don’t need to go crazy with mods on these cars, they are heavy and until you are willing to remove all the legal items from the car and take the motor to the letter of the rules, thse cars will not be the "car to have " in either STS or STX. If I had to do it again, I’d get an RS 92-93 and swap everything over from my present car, and remove the A/C, radio and anything I could get out of the car and still be within the rule set. As for now, I enjoy the creature comforts to and from events, and will know more about how this car stacks up against the Mini’s sometime next month.
im getting my car ready for the track now, i hope im getting it done right, but yeah im trying to go a track event here in a few months, i just need to find a helmet
I got my RS-5 from them for 182 after the handling fee. Pretty good company although the first one they sent me was cracked. I called and they came and picked it up and had a new one shipped within a week.
Hey…
I disappeared from this thread, good info here.
I did’t get the car ready as I was expecting.
I went to my first auto-x last sunday, I got a vid and I will be uploading soon, but no G2s, just a g3 type r and a g3 GS.
I will be puting some ES bushing kit and the rear ES motor mount some time soon.
I will be going to the next event too, just to look, socialize and maybe hitch a ride if possible. Suspension Setups are too expensive for me, so I will be running if at all with my stocks and street tires, maybe next year I will get some HR Race or some coils (if the prices for coils is good).
