I just bought a 1990 Integra LS at a auto auction for $1100, While driving it home i noticed that at about 50mph the rpms almost redlined but i wasnt going any faster. I let up on the gas and then slowly gained more speed and finally it shifted and i was soon going 85mph. I noticed that it wanted to max out at about 90mph unless kicked up the rpms to about 4 grand. Right before i got home my friend in another car said he saw smoke, when i stopped it was leaking transmission fluid. I know this may sound like a shot tranny but it really seems strong to me. Is my transmission computer controlled and if so does this sound like a bad chip? Also what is s3 and s4? Please help.
what color is the smoke? maybe ur clutches in the tranny is gone. check ur coolant and see what color is it. maybe ur oil cooler is cracked. the s3 s4 light is like a check engine light for the tranny.
if it is ur tranny that is shot. i have an automatic b16a tranny with only 30,000 miles on it that i’m sellin. let me knw if ur interested.
just today i noticed that the transmission fluid is WAY overfilled, could this have made the car not want to shift? (its an automatic) I plan on draining the fluid and replacing it but at kragen the guy said he didnt have any ATF with dexron II and he said that dexron III is not reccomended. What should i do?
I have a 92 LS with the auto tranny, I believe the S3 and S4 modes are “sport” modes that let the rpms climb higher before shifting. Not positive but thats just my 2 cents.

info there was quite inaccurate…
auto trannies have no cluthes. s3 and s4 is a sport shifiting mode. if there was a problem with the s3 and s4 modes the s3 would blink right after start up.
my personal opinion would be to stick with honda atf
one thing u might wanna check would be the shift silenoids

Are you sure? I could swear that there were clutch packs in Automatics, they don’t look anything like the manual tranny clutch, but they serve a similar purpose.

did u notice it over fill before or did it happen all of a sudden? what color was the fluid? try checking ur coolant color. from what u say now. u could have a broken auto tanny oil cooler causing the high fluid in there but someone could have made a mistake and put too much. when the car is started check ur coolant level and color.
yes automatic trannies have clutches too. its just not the same as manual clutches.
yes, auto tranny have clutches and they DO wear out that’s why they slip. sometimes bad torque converter causes the tranny to slip too or the bands need to be adjusted. just take your car to a transmission shop and have them tell you whats going with it. i’m pretty sure it’s a free estimate anyways.
s3 and s4
can someone explain the s3 and s4 thing to me.
thanks a lot

the s3 and s4 is similar to an manual tranny. it just stays in 3rd gear a little longer for more of the power band (going to high rpm). eh cant explain it but its something like that.
Yaa, auto trannies have clutches for each gear… and overfilling makes them wear prematurely
thaank you for clearing that up
