hey guys, maybe you can help me out. my car, a 90 integra LS, is an automatic and every once in a while it wont let me shift out of park. it just gets stuck there. i have to play with it for about 10 minutes or more until the thing will move. anybody know what can be wrong and if it’s an easy fix? i didnt want to try to fix it myself until i got some feedback. thanks
i have a 90 RS and every once and a while my AT wont shift into park. if you watch the dash for the P to light up in read it should be able to shift into and out of park. you can also stick a key shaped objet into the shift release hole next to the shifter to free up your tranny.
is it only on hills? My experience with other autos is you should pull your brake first before sticking it in park. If you stick it in park first the car will use the tranny to stop it from moving and that makes it hard to shift when you want to get going again.
i think your right on that. if i dont put on the brake it makes a deep klunk when shifted.
well the problem isn’t really putting it into park, it’s getting it out of park. I’m thinking maybe something is out of alignment…Oh well, i’ll take a closer look at it today. Oh yeah, another question though, what does the shift release keyhole do? My key doesn’t fit in there so I can’t really find out.
yes, I know your problem is getting out of park. What I said was that if you don’t pull your brake before you put it into park you’re going to have a hard time getting it out of park later.
I believe the master switch connector is loose.
At least that what happened when mine was unable to shift out of P.
Locate the biggest connector under the driver footwell and reconnect it.
i have the same problem in the winter time. it is something that just happens when a car gets older. try a little grease in the linkage. the reason why you should set the e-brake first is because you don’t want the wieght of the car being held by the transmission. the brake takes that force off of the tranny. the key-release is there so you can shift through the gears without the car turned on. it is mainly used by mechanics when they need to unload the force off the transmission to work on the motor and may have the battery disconnected. at least, thats what honda told me. don’t worry about the hanging up in park, it isn’t hurting anything.
I think this has been discussed before…it’s just a problem seen with many of the tegs…there’s not much to really do except just sit an wait for it to engage into park…it’s a pain in the ass
