Hey guys i recently got my hands one a gsr bottom end. i also have a jdm b16 complete engine. Im wondering what i should do here. Im thinking use the gsr bottom end but with b16 pistons. use the b16 head but upgrade the valvetrain. Maybe some type r or some kind of similar aftermarket cams. i also have a type r intake manifold. Please give me 2 cents.
Bump. Would it be worth spending a couple bucks for gsr cams? I’m not new to hondas. I’ve owned 7 hondas over the years. Just never built a motor. I’ve only swapped stock motors into my cars. A little insight would be appreciated. Ill even take your common “use a search engine” “search” “search the site” “its been covered” blah blah blah. As long as there’s a little knowldege in your post, Ill be happy. I havent found a gsr bottom with a b16 head, b16 pistons on gsr rods, and gsr cams build. Wondering if it would be worth the work. Come on guys, one of you have to know something useful to me.
GSR cams would be a mild upgrade from B16 cams. There are other options out there, but GS-R cams can be had for pretty cheap. They are also good for boost. But, truth be told, most of Honda’s B-series cams are good for boost.
I have a set of GS-R cams for sale if interested. $80 shipped.
I think you should go with your plan of GS-R bottom end, but see if you can source some ITR pistons. But, I believe the B16 pistons would work just fine. ITR would give you noticeably higher compression and the window for making good power with a tune gets much bigger. I wouldn’t do much in the way of headwork unless you go boost. Maybe a mild port and polish to get the head pretty close to ITR spec, swap to an ITR intake manifold (I’d have it port matched to the intake ports on the head) and throttle body.
With this setup, and your basic bolt on parts of intake, header, cat, and exhaust, you could have a really reliable, mostly OEM build, that could make around 175-185whp on a good tune. That, coupled with the gearing of the B16 tranny, could make for a really fun DD/weekend warrior. I’d also recommend a quality limited slip differential. Who wants that kind of power, but can’t hook up due to the infamous “one wheel peel”, or having terrible accelleration in the corners due to only one wheel driving the car through the turn.
