Well after looking for heads for an ls vtec, I realize I could get a nice JDM b16 like the rest of u guys on the board and just swap that in. If I do go with a b16a swap:
Can I use a First-Gen b16a?
For the ECU, I know i use a vtec ecu, but are the wires, like vtec pressure switch, are those already on the plug which the ecu attaches?
how does one go about putting in the new ecu?
If all B-series engines are so compatible, will my b18a alternator, starter, p/s pump a/c compressor all that stuff go on the b16a with the b18a brackets?
The b16a is a bolt in affair correct? All mounts are the same? ANY modification whatsoever?
When I get a b16a in the car, how do I get parts for a jdm engine? Can I use parts from the 94 delsols or the 99 si’s?
Would my LS tranny be fine for the swap? It bolts to the b16a block right? Is gearing much of an issue LS vs JDM (ys1 i think?)
Finally how hard is it to drop the engine in from the top? I heard honda puts the engines in from below, but is it real hard pulling them from the top?
Thanks for your help guys, just trying to figure out my options.
Jim
the b16a should come with all the alternator, power steering… but i believe the b18a parts will work—at least i hope so, cause i’m plannin on useing my b18a ones with my b17a.
Never thought of putting the engine in from the bottom. It does sound like it could be easier if you had a car lift and could just roll the engine on a dolly under the bay, lower the car and use the engine lift to pull it up into place. Don’t know if it’ll fit that way tho. The rest of us use a rolling shop crane/engine lift. Its a pain to do cause the engines have to be pulled/indserted at an angle (tranny side down) to fit around the mount. When that side was into place, i lifted up a floor jack to hold it there until the other side was lowered. Get some mount bolts in and do some serious muscle manipulating to get the back mount lined up. Maybe when i do more i’ll be better at it.
You can install a motor from the bottom if you don’t have a cherry picker available. You will have to take the intake manifold off to clear the rear cross member and avoid damage.
The VTEC ecu plugs right in to your existing plugs (wiring harness), you’ll need to run 4 extra wires. 2 for VTEC, 1 knock sensor and 1 for the 2nd Oxygen sensor. My JDM ecu came with the plugs and the wires cut. I took the wire from the JDM plug and inserted the wire into my Integra’s plug on the ECU side of the wiring harness.
All your engine accessories power steering, alternator, a/c compressor, will match. My motor came with the starter, alternator, and A/C compressor bracket (no compressor).
The b16a drops right in. Easy as Sunday morning.
No modifications what so ever to the motor mounts or braces.
When I was ordering parts I used the 94 del sol name. The 99 si parts didn’t match up on a few different parts.
I would recommend getting the tranny also, it’s not that much more cash and the gearing is great for the VTEC motor.
It is not hard to drop the engine in from the top. That is how I did mine.
I haven’t heard about how Honda puts the motors in their cars, but from the top will work.
i got some questions too, and i figure i can get an answer on this thread…
I have a 92 integra gs which i got an awesome deal on, but the only problem is its an automatic (I figured i could live with it) Is there any way to make my auto tranny work with a b16a jdm swap? if not, then what can i do? i think canging my tranny to a manual is out of the question, considering the center console would have to be changed and the clutch added and all that…
thanks for any help.

When I was ordering my b16a package I remember some people talking about b16a auto ECU floating around. People (supposedly)were getting b16a engines, manual trannys with an auto ECU. Katman, a guy that does ecu chipping, says that he can switch an b16a auto ECU to a manual. So I guess they exist, you’ll have to do some seriuos seaching.
Switching an auto integra to a manual integra (tranny) is not recommended.
Check out www.nippon-motors.com I ordered my engine through them and they might be able to get the b16a with an auto tranny.

I just saw a b16A with an auto tranny at an engine dealer in Miami yesterday. They do exist but they are not very popular. The ECU is differnt it has different rev limits. The cams are also different on the Auto equiped B16A’s. Make some calls and see if you can find one I betthat there is a dealer out there that would be glad to get rid of one!
