I have a 91 2dr and am considering buying a 1.6 Vtec out of a 93 Civic. I believe these motors are the B16a’s, but correct me if I’m wrong because I’m sort of unfamiliar with Vtec’s. Anyways, I found one of these motors, in good shape, with its computer and wiring harness for $450 and I was wondering if it would bolt up to my original tranny, motor mounts and whether or not it is a good deal on these motors. If anyone could let me know of all the needs for this swap and even if it is worth, it would be appreciated. Thanks.
Yes your tranny will bolt right up! Your car is a 91 its OBD0 and if the motor is out of a 93 Civic its OBD1 so you’ll have to do the conversion. Yes the motor mounts will work. As far as the motor goes, depends on what your looking for in a swap? Is this your daily driver or track car, etc. Many guys will tell you the LS motor is better and others like the VTEC. Its all in what you like i guess.
Honestly that’s a great deal if it is a b16a. Do you know if it’s comming from japan or is it out of a civic from america. If it’s from america then it’s a D16Z6 which is vtec but it’s only single over head cam. If it is the d series don’t bother with it cuz it’s a complete downgrade. They only put out 125hp. And with those i don’t believe the tranny fits up.
Just make sure it’s the DOHC vtec engine.
Also, if you have an LS tranny (long geared) then you may not be happy with the swap even if its a good engine. The B16’s in Japan had short geared trannys mated to them.
For the wire harness conversion, check out http://www.rywire.com great guys, and if you cant find the harness, call them, and they will show you which one you need.
Just talked to my cousin who was the one who told me about the motor and he went and checked it out after I asked what type it was, DOHC or SOHC, and which I was lookin for, since he’s unfamiliar with Honda Motors and he found it was the SOHC Vtec and it was out of a 95 Civic, which would be a downgrade from the Jdm B18b. I was sort of bummed because for the price if it was the B16 it would have been a good investment, from what I was told, either if I installed it or even if I turned and sold it for more. Anyways, thanks to you who tried to help me out on this one but I will keep your advice in mind when I find a good, actual, B16. Late.
another harness option is the obd-0 to obd-1 conversion harness from jdmshit.com alot cheaper. what i will be gettin for my b16 in a couple days…ill tell you how it works out
jdmshit.com’s does not have the distributor adapter, nor the V-TEC sub harness. That is most likely why it is cheaper.
From JDMShit:
Brand New JDMsh!t ECU Adapter Harness
OBD-0 → OBD-1 (88-91 cars)
$95 shipped
Brand New Item w/Piggy-Back Harness, Includes Complete Conversion Instructions For OBD-0 to OBD-1
From RyWire:
What you will get:
- OBD0 to OBD1 ECU Conversion Harness
- VTEC Subharness w/correct O2 Sensor, plug and play with ECU Jumper.
- OBD0 to OBD1 Distributor Adapter (OBD2 B-Series available upon request)
$190.00 (+shipping I assume. I am not going to go though the ordering process to find out) When I ordered mine, the Rywire guy said that I might need a fan adapter (for length), he was right, I was ~6 inches too short if I remember correctly. He gave me one for free.
So for $95 more, you get the V-TEC sub harness (with correct O2 sensor plug), and the Distributor adapters so you don’t have to rewire those too.
