B16 tranny 5th gear swap

hey guys i have a da9 with a b16a y1 tranny and i love it but the main reason i got this car was to have a good commuter car i drive on the free way for a majority of the time and i wanna keep my tranny but just swap out my 5th gear what tranny would you guys recommend to get that 5th gear out of? thanks guys. im semi new i just picked up this car like a month ago.

I asked this same question a while ago. You get the 5th gear from an ls transmission off a b18.

How to actually swap it, i have no idea

your better of getting a a spare ls tranny . your going to like the ls just fine. trust me I had the y1 and did the ls 5th hated it since it felt like it bogged out when racing. plus you don’t want to ruin the y1.

Instead of a ls 5th go with your b16 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and get a gsr 4th and 5th … this way you have a smoother transition into longer gears for commuting but you still have the shorter geared 1-3 for racing. I have a buddy with this setup & he enjoyed it quite a bit.

well I had it for over a year and hated it. just get a spare tranny, you can always change back.

I sold a 90-91 S1 short geared transmission with a 4-5 for $900, the guy who I sold it too said it was the best thing he ever did for the car. he has a B16 in there and love how fast he can pick up in the city but still chose to cruise lower RPM’s with the 4-5. That transmission I sold him was a complete rebuild with new synchro barings so it was basically a new transmission for him.

I am working on doing that with a 92 transmission in my 1990 integra with a B17a in there. I have driven the GSR transmissions before and they are great, but having that GS/LS 4-5 is nice especially with today’s gas prices.

My thoughts, you are doing the right thing. Although If you can afford it, get a 92 transmission if you can afford the real total cost. So far my cost between two transmissions, labor is about $1200 (did some trading so I don’t know the exact cash value)

when I did the 90-91 transmission, it was $350 per transmission which is about fair market value, then $350 for mechanic work, and another $350 for synchro’s barings. So roughly the same price. It is easier to find the 90-91 transmissions, but from what I have seen and researched the 92+ transmission are better and stronger with their internal designs. Biggest thing, DON"T EVER run low on tranny oil~! I locked two transmisson from an oil leak at the axle transmission seal. Very spendy repair
