b16a swapped, ls trans and ecu question

I bought a 1990 Integra LS. It still has the original ls transmission mated to an imported b16a. The previous owner is a friend and told me all of the details that went into the swap. He said he used his original trans since it was a cable trans, and suggested that I find shorter geared cable trans to get the most out of the swap. He also converted the car from obd0 to obd1 with an automatic ecu that has a resistor in it to work with the manual trans. I would like to find a manual trans obd1 ecu but I’m unsure which model ecu to look for. I want to get the right ecu so I can get a tune in the works. I’ve used the search feature, and most of the results say to use pr3 or a p61? I’m not sure if that works with the current set up or not. The car does have functioning vtec as it sits now. I mainly commute with the car, but I would like to squeeze a little more performance with some economy in mind.

Then the next question is should I swap the LS trans (do not plan to boost the engine ever) or just change the first 3 gears with those from a GSR trans? I would like to keep some highway economy, but would also like some quicker acceleration. The trans feels like it will need some new synchros, so I’m trying to gauge what is the convenient option.

Honestly, if you’re going to chip/tune the ecu, any OBD1 auto or manual ECU will do as the person who does your chipping should be able add in vtec and do an auto to manual conversion. Don’t have to necessarily find a “VTEC” ecu.

As for your transmission finding a legit YS1 short gear is hard these days as people tend to think all YS1 are the GSR so you have to watch out for those scammers and know how to identify one (there are threads in G2IC that state how).

There are other options too such as the JDM S1 Y1 J1 but the condition of those are pretty bad by now. Expect to pay $300+ for good one.

you should save for a hydro conversion. it’s better technology than cable and cable Trans are hard to find and expensive to rebuild.

Thanks for the link. That gives me some options to look for.

I’ve been searching through this forum and that looks like the move. I’ll have to save up and start piecing the parts together. I may go with the Hush Performance kit and then find a newer trans. Thanks for the suggestion. That has opened up a lot of options.

I have a short geared Xsi transmission with an LS 5th gear set on it. Its cable, reliable, no grinds, and professionally assembled. Since it is a large spline transmission the internals are interchangeable with hydro parts. Ive swapped out my b series so I have no use for it anymore. If you are serious email me and we can talk about it there.
