B17 with PCT pistons too risky?

I am always intrigued with the debate over whether or not slapping some PCT (CTR) pistons in a b17 is a wise decision. The idea of having around 12.5:1 CR with such a wide selection of manufacturers to chose from is very appealing and then there is always the little detail of having the piston stick out of the block a smidge with the B17 (B16 with some strokage). Is this really an issue? Does it effect the combustion to much to make the compression worth it, and how does it effect squelch?

it will become a hi rev na monster, i think it can be a real good motor build if you do it right. the 1.7 crank and opine the door for a lot of things, i really think a buildet b17 can out perform some buildet b18c or even ls/b20 vtec

12.5:1 is OK as long as you build the rest of the motor accordingly, get it tuned properly, and are prepared to run high octane fuel. I’m not sure what octane you get in TX, but here in CA the highest we get at the pump is 91 which is not high enough for a 12.5:1 engine. It can be made to run, but you have to do a bunch to get it to do so properly. Which means you’re just wasting it’s potential and would have been better off with a lower compression to begin with.

Dont forget that the CTR’s pop about .03" out of the block. You could actually see and feel them coming out of my block when I put them in. I had to put a double layered head gasket to make it work. Or else the piston would have hit the head. I ended up just taking them out and using B16a pistons

this is exactly my question. How does the piston coming out of the head affect the efficiency of the combustion chamber? I know i can get aftermarket pistons to make 12.5:1 without it popping out of the block but for around 200 bucks a set I would like to have a good reason not to go with ctr.

Read it again. I told you what my issue was. If you don’t believe me you can goggle it. I was just talking to another guy on a different honda forum that was having piston valve clearence issues with those pistons.
