B17a1 GSR Rebuild

The Process
Hello G2IC members. This is just a set ups and Specs list if you will. I’m simply asking for some pointers. My DB2 came original all matching Vins. With no surprise the motor had about 267K on it and after a month of owning it she started to tick at cold start. Yes indeed spun bearing. Although it had just begun because it only knocked on cold starts ever so slightly for a very short time. I would love some pointers as to which direction I should go. Is the crank save able? Is my main concern at the moment. She’s running a HMO B20B at the moment so I got time and the motor out and ready to go into surgery. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

You won’t know for sure what’s salvageable until you have the machine shop inspect it. But assuming you caught it early and there wasn’t a catastrophic failure I’d expect the crank and rods are ok. As for recommendations… That depends on what you want from the engine - just a rebuild so it’s running again or are you trying to increase power, and if do, by how much? And most importantly what’s your budget?

Without knowing more I’d suggest a stock rebuild other than changing the pistons to bump up the compression. Low compression is the biggest downfall of the b17 and upping it makes a big improvement in performance. You could also consider ITR/CTR valvetrain and intake manifold. And of course you’ll want to have it tuned on a dyno.

The crank may be salvageable, and may only require a micro polish & new bearings at best. That will cost less than $200. I just had my b18a1 w/ originally 113k micro polished for $90 after tax. Before any of that, I would check your maximum clearance for the crank.

Look around dif shops for the price of the micro polish I have been quoted 140$ called around 40$ from a family ran guy and he is extremely knowkedgeable with hondas
