B18A piston question CTR? ITR?

Okay, I want to put new pistons in my B18A. What should I do ITR or CTR? I want the CTR but someone said compression might be too high? I also have a question about rod strength. If I am going all motor with no NOS should I replace the rods or not??? With the pistons mentioned above, should I just order JE Pistons? Someone with the kits installed let me know how the install went and how the car runs…

I would go with the ITR, cause you can run regular pump gas with no detonation…you will have to bore .25 Over to fit the ITR pistons, but it is worth it. IF you want the high compression for all motor, slap in the CTRs, you are going to have to run most likely octane booster, cause your CR will be somewhere in the 12s I believe…Stock LS rods should be able to handle about 250 HorsePower Stock, so unless you are going to go more than that…change the rods, can I suggest CROWER FORGED RODS…

b18a w/ itr pistons: 10.8:1
b18a w/ ctr pistons: 11.4:1
and what i would recommend: b18a w/ p30 pistons: 11.0:1

it will all depend on what octane gas you can get. here in cali all we can get is 91. So, 11.4 might be a little high, but 11.0 would be just fine. If you can get higher octane in NC then maybe the ctr pistons would be perfect for you.

in the future for all your compression ratio questions, consult: http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/compcalc/compcalc.html

three reason to run the p30 pistons:
-they cost the same as the itr and ctr (www.jdmhondaparts.com)
-they give higher compression than the itr, but still not as high as the ctr… this is good if you can’t get high octane gas
-you won’t have to pay to have the rods shaved for them to fit.

speedaddicts is wrong about one thing. you do not have to get oversized. Whether or not you need oversized just depends on the condition of your cylinders. Sometimes its needed, other times stock bore is still just fine. However i’d recommend going oversized. They cost the same, plus you get a little added displacement as well as the for sure insurance that the cylinder walls are straight and clean and that the rings will seat well.

however if you use the itr or ctr (or any b18c) pistons you will have to have the rods shaved approx 1mm on each side. Its required for them to fit. But don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt the strength of the rods.

If you’re going naturally aspirated with your LS motor then you should stick with the stock rods, they are pretty strong. Just get them shot peened. Then they’ll be safe to a little over 8k rpm, which is pretty much as high as you’ll need to rev.

Good information guys. what are the P30 pistons out of. I run 93 octane ALWAYS in my car…thats the highest around in NC…

p30 pistons are the pistons from the 2nd generation jdm b16’s (92+). they are the second highest compression piston for the b series engine (ctr being the highest, and itr being 3rd down on the list).

93 octane would be plenty good for the 11:1, and should be fine for 11.4:1 as well.

so for these p30 pistons, you dont have to machine the rods??? If so, I’ll probably get those…my stepdad works at the dealer so I can get them at cost…

I asked a local dealer if he could order P30’s and he couldn’t because they were not USDM.

no surprise there. he can’t order itr or ctr pistons either. (unless you want usdm itr… which personally i think are much too small for the applications we’re talking about here).

try www.jdmhondaparts.com They can get you itr, ctr or p30 pistons, rings, and wrist pins for $330+shiping+tax So far thats the best price i’ve seen.

grouppbuy has any honda pistons on sale now for $329 shipped. they said they could get ahold of PR3’s for the same price…

Try to buy everything as a set…Like with the wrist pins and rings, you tend to save a little more money

I KNOW GEN2GSR was selling some ITR PISTONS with rings and wrist pins for cheap…ask him

do they offer standard and oversized? if they sell oversized for that price i’ll buy them right now (assuming it includes rings and wrist pins).

i just checked, and i can’t find that groupbuy. could you send me the link. cause if you’re right about that price i’m on it asap!

I doubt they include rings and wrist pins though…

go to groupbucenter.com and look under honda/acura and then lok under engine…its in there i promise…island motorsports…they come with rings, I am not sure about pins…
