For those of you considering a B16 swap for your teg… you might want to consider this.
Recently rebuilt my B18A with JE 10:1 pistons and Eagle rods. Hit the dyno, with regular bolt ons and fuel riser. Pulled a 132 hp and 122 tq. Compared to a B16 with bolt ons, my B18A had higher HP at all RPM’s and much higher torque. B16A hp is about the same at 132, but torque was only at 98!
Much cheaper than a swap! I can’t wait to smoke some Civic SI’s out there! Even the newer hatchbacks!
yeah…then you pretty much will hit a solid brick wall the the b18 in terms of NA performance. It will soon be unstreetable if you want to even attemp to hit low 14’s w/o stripping every single thing that can be removed in your vehicle. B16-it’s just better if you plan to go fast. With the b18-i would boost, just save up, and buy a turbo kit, and save for installation etc.
yup, thats the main problem i see with the b18a as well. Its potential just isn’t what you can get from a vtec engine. There is that point where they just stop being streetable. and then another point where they just stop making power. With a vtec engine you can dump just as much money into it as with a fully built b18a, and it will be incredibly streetable and still have some potential for you to take advantage of in the future.
basically it depends on how far you want to take your motor. Its easy to do some simple mods to your b18a and turn it into a non vtec gsr killer. But if you’re in it for the long haul, and/or aren’t satisfied with only having 150-160whp then you really should opt for a vtec engine.
recently got rid of my T3 turbo kit, and thats what started the rebuild. Didn’t blow the motor or anything. Low 14’s are hard on any honda motor without some building, weight reduction, boost, or NOS. I’m running NA for a while, until I can build a custom T3/T4 kit and tune for higher compression. All I’m saying is that for $1000.00 for rods and pistons vice $3000.00 for a complete swap, you can still get more power with the same reliability. My car runs so smooth, you’d think it’s stock!
vtec engines are great… my b18a has a 149.000 miles on it… the engine is running so rich that b16as, ls/vtecs, b20/vtecs cant keep up with it… the only mod a have is a custom intake and advanced timing. the engine is running rich… you have to see to beleive it.
there are some people in this forum that have seen me racing… i`m not sure what his username is…
Seems like you spent all the money on the bottom end. So no sweat. When you hit the “brick wall” with the airflow through the head easy peasy swap it out. Hopefully you got pistons with larger valve reliefs if you want to do that later on.
