B18C1 bogs down around 3k Engine running rich Need Help!!

As the title states, my car is losing power and is getting horrible gas mileage. I checked for vacuum leaks, topped off radiator, and just recently changed plugs and got an oil change. I’m stuck.

  1. Cold start up is sluggish, sounds like a lawnmower or running off only 3 cylinders then eventually evens out.
  2. While driving around 3k rpm it feels really hesitant then runs normal after 3500rpm.
  3. Engine has 164k miles.

I considered Seafoaming it to get results but Im hesitant because of the high mileage may rupture head seals.

Any input would be appreciated.

Oh yeah, 95’ B18C1 OBD1 all stock. Ecu, intake, injectors, etc.

I’m not familiar with the V-Tec motors per-se, but… this sounds like a timing related issue…

Timing…hmm I’ll check it out.

Thanks for the reply.

Just to clarify… I’m assuming he’s suggesting mechanical timing, NOT ignition timing. Ignition related problems can cause stumbling issues too but I’d for sure check mechanical timing first to rule that out (not to mention it’s a more dangerous problem so should be ruled out immediately). If the timing belt skipped a tooth or two it could show the symptoms you’re seeing.

Thanks Colin, so in order for me to check if the belt skipped a tooth, I’d have to remove the Valve cover and take a look? Never really messed with Engine internals so I’m iffy on how to do it. So if it did skip a tooth that would throw everything out of whack like cam timing, valves, etc. right?

You should be consulting your Helms manual for the procedure to check timing (it’s in the timing belt section). You’ll need to pull the valve cover so you can see the cam gears, then you’ll compare the position of the cam gears with each other and with the position of the crank.

Having your mechanical timing off causes the engine to run poorly since the timing between valves opening/closing, spark, pistons…etc is not correct. But what’s worse is that if it’s off by a lot you can potentially damage your internals. I’m not sure if the b18c1 is an interference engine or not, but I’d guess it most likely is. Also, if it skipped a tooth randomly that could be a sign that your timing belt is in need of being replaced or that maybe your tensioner has failed.
