Currently I am planning to use my b18a AEM Cold Air Intake, DC Sport 4-2-1 CC header, and my b18a intake manifold with a b20z longblock. I’m not sure if that will get the full potential out of the new engine.
What would you guys suggest for the cold air intake (what size piping?)? I want to go with AEM because their CAI’s have always put out the best numbers, but I doubt any other cold air intake will fit without some modification. I believe that a b18a has a smaller diameter piping for the air intake.
The header is a 2 piece 4-2-1. I put it in last april, so it is still pretty new. The design was specific and ideal for a b18a (for its money). But now that it is a b20, would I need a bigger collector? 4-1? if I should change the header, what would you recommend?
Also, I plan on using my existing AEM FPR, B&M FP Gauge, AEM Underdrive Pullies on Power Steering and Alternator. I’m guessing the new block doesn’t affect these other boltons, but just making sure.
for those curious, I’m using my crower valvetrain and aem cam gears.
I’m going to leave my carsound hiflow cat and dc sport catback, since the catback is 2.25" in diameter anyway.
All the things you had/have for the LS would work on the B20. That’s what i did with mine, used the same AEM short ram (2.75"), stock header and cat, HKS exhaust, IM, fuel rail, injectors, etc. With all those i dynoed at 128whp and 124wtq. Member Brekekex made 140 whp with everything stock except a test pipe.
As to what’s best, i am not sure but what i would do is transfer everything over to the b20 and then do research from other people’s setup and go from there.
I’d say ditch the b18a intake mani. The ports are quite a bit smaller and according to a fluid dynamics expert, the resultant rapid air expansion causes power robbing turbulence.
I found the power a little disappointing in my setup, but I’ll let you know if i can feel the dif after i put my low rise b20 mani on.
Daver, what manifold do you have on right now? And the IM that came with your b20 is the LS style one right?
I also want to find out what the difference is between the manifolds from 90-91, 92-93 (what i have), 94-95, 96-up. I don’t know if there’s a difference between the 94-95 vs. 96-up except for the placement of the pcv valve. If you have any info about those IMs, please share with us. Thanks
a low rise b20 manifold is simply the intake mani that came with my '96 jdm b20b engine. Looks pretty much like an ls mani except it’s actually a little lower, and it doesn’t have all the gizmos and vacuum tube nipples that my '90 one does. And most of all, the ports are a good 1/8 or 3/16" taller (same width tho).
So the b20 head, of course, has the matching intake port sizes and i have my '90 ls mani, with its dinky little ports, hooked up now. I hated putting that one on, but i didn’t want to deal with trying to figure out the vacuum tube routing and what all those other gizmos did at the time. Just wanted to get it running…
I think i can make the b20 mani work tho, if i use the ls tb and get some spare vacuum hose.
People say that the crv head is the exact same as the '94 and up ls one (which makes reasonable sense), so that would definately make the '94 up intake mani have bigger ports than the '90, '91 at least. For the 92/93, some say the intake mani is better flowing (than the 91), and some say not. So i can’t help there.
I did take pics of every little thing during my swap, i just havn’t made up a nice website for them yet.
