b20 head on b18a

hey guys,

what do you guys think about this setup… the b20 head port/polished on the stock ls block…??? what do you think my gains will be and how does the price of $400 sound? any suggestions? any experiences??

I think $400 is kinda steep, thats about what I would pay for a vtec head. Anyways, the increase will be minimal on a b18a, just better airflow. Maybe 5-10 hp.

a B20 head IS an LS head.
exactly the same.

only benefit will be having less miles and the newer 92+ cams.

Well your basically getting a newer head with a p&p that hopefully was done by a reputable shop and like the other guys said better cams. I think so long as nothing is wrong with it, it’s a pretty good deal. With the cams and the p&p maybe combined a 10-15 hp gain.

if its a good heavy duty p&p then its a good deal. If its stock, or someone just polished it a bit in their garage w/ a dremel then you’re gettin ripped.

yes, the b20 head is the same as the b18b head (not the b18a head). I believe the ports are a little better design.

i don’t think i’d go as far as to say 10-15hp. maybe 10hp. but without some performance cams and higher compression the p&p really won’t do too much.

I was saying a good port job is gonna give you 5-10 correct? And 92+ cams are usually good for 3-5 right? That’s why I said 10-15.
But yeah with better cams (403’s, 301’s) and gears and some dyno tunning your looking at quite a bit more power.

hey thanks guys

now i have a better view of the set up… but think about this though, the b20 head p/p, ctr pistons, skunk 2 IM, and if i can find one a JG throttle body. and good cams… yeah… would that be a good set up??? well, yeah i’ve got some fast money coming soon so i want to speed up my car… don’t want to go w/ turbo yet, recommended not too, cuz first race car…rookie in the making of a fast car… thanks for your help guys… btw not too sure i want to go w/ ls-vtec… heard its not too reliable… have to drive 60 miles to school.

port/polish b20 head, with some crower 403’s, valvesprings, retainers, ctr pistons… all that stuff you’ll have a good strong motor.

however if you are thinking of going turbo in the future you will not want to go with this setup. If you do decide to go turbo later on down the line you’ll need to swap out the cams and the pistons for different more turbo friendly ones. Make your choice on NA or FI now, before you start buying anything. It’ll save you $$ in the long run.

I got a better head for you

Well the JG race head is a head that JG worked on, it is port and polished, comes with JG valve springs, JG retainers, JG valves, JG 303 cams, and AEM cam gears. The head had a few 1/4 passes on it when I got it, I have not installed it so there is hardly any use from me.

Let me know if intrested 625 OBO thanks man:drool:

uhg, do a search man. This topic comes up MANY of times and I have commented on it too many times. The search will Answer ALL your questions.

I wouldn’t do LS/Vtec if you want to have an reliable engine. Many people just don’t make them right so thats why they are kinda iffy. Just do allmotor application with the b20. Thats what I’m doing.
