umm… i got a 15.9 in my teg with the stock LS and just exhaust… and i was getting 2.3 60’ times…
Man talk about digging up old threads. =)
yeah, i didnt realize how old it was til after i posted. but i still think it can help a lot of people, including myself
You don’t see me complaining. I just got a B20.
did you guys do the install yourselves? did any of you happen to build up on the motor at all?
i plan on getting the B20, sending the head to get p+p, getting new high comp pistons and forged rods, putting that stuff in myself if i can, assembling the motor, and putting it in myself, if i can. i dont think it would be too hard, just time consuming
i just met a guy with a 93gsr, and he swapped a crv base and kept all the gsr head etc… and he said it was amazing…
it cost him $1500can for everything including labor…
so i’m wondering if i should do that too… my gsr is burning oil and i feel the car is slow… so i want to know if it is really worth it to swap a b20 base in it…
who here have a 92-93 b17 with a b20 base?? can give any opinion?
btw, the guy i met, crashed his car two month after the swap… probably too much power

im gonna keep mine non-vtec for sheer reliability. im sure you can build a cr/vtec to drive for a while, i just dont wanna take that chance. im not building a race car here either, i just want an engine with some balls. and a mildly built B20 has got some big round cogones
Mine isnt in yet. Im building it up, and putting it in, in the spring.
Eviloliv3: Really your time was a 15.9? whats your elevation? Track temp? Air temp?
What sucks is that i have pulled that on drag rad. and reg. tires sigh Owell… I think your lower elevation there in AZ?
Hey Jeff you know bout this? I thought my times were high… But maybe thats cuase i am at a higher elevation… but i thought it wouldnt be much more…??? Hmmm

theres a video of me doing the 15.9 in the video forum. it was about 70 or so degrees outside, not sure on the elevation though, my guess would be something like 3000 feet
Hmmm???
Damn thats it, 70? ITs gets that cold there? haha JK… Well when i ran it was 110 air temp and track temp was 120… Maybe thats why? But i dont think your elevation is the same as ours? cause were sittin bout that here i belive maybe a lil less… I bet you elevation is WAY lower then that… but if it is that, then theres something wrong with either me or my car or both… Prob just the dumb driver hahaha…
I did put in the motor myself for the most part, all it was, was R&R which i had done befor… My engin is acually (g2deeznutz) old one, with the exception of the clutch, 8.5pd flywheel and the tranny… It was VERY simple and the only thing that changed was ?temp senser? plug, which was not on the back of the block but moved to the tranny side of it? If thats not right PLS correct me… Other then that, it worked GREAT!
FYI: CHECK YOUR MOTOR MOUNTS! haha i had to replace mine with in the first 4 months (its all the tq) hahaha… Insted i just put in prothane incerts for it tho… And now its ALL BETTER! YAY! But, now my car shakes like a racecar, but is fine with me cause thats how i like it… If you want a smooth ride, then you better get OEM, but be WARRED there EXPENSIVE! I went the cheep route and spent 30 bucks… and were pretty easy to put in for the most part… Just double check that all 3 are the right ones first, casue you mite have to shave off some if there not right like my rear one if you use them…
Jeff do you know what it is exactly here in ID and in AZ (the ft in elevation i mean)?
L8R
DG
Damn you have LOTS of smoke comin out your rear, you mite wanna get that checked out bud haha, good vid i must say, but you jump the gun hehe, quick reaction. i like the .014RT and a 2.4 60’… hehe Car looks good goin down the track for sure… U have fatty fives on there?
L8R
DG
yes i do have the fat fives on there. i jumped the gun about 5 times that night, cause im used to racing my parents Jetta, which takes longer to get going, i used to hit constant .1s and now im hitting constant -.015s. the smoke is from my 3rd cylinder that i have bad compression in, ive got what i think is a bad piston ring that makes me burn oil like mad. if i can get my 60’s down to 2.2 or 2.1 i should be getting like 15.7s
Edit: Elevation is 1500 above sea level
Nice they look very good… Ouchie on the 3erd cyl tho… Ummm and thats why you pull those time BTW… Were sittin round 2800-3000 ft here… Hmm i guess i see when i go to sac… should be low 15s im guessing?? Cause the motor with a stock fly, clutch and ls tranny hit 15.3 i belive when i was there in april when the motor was in aarons car… Hmmm Owell,
The B20 is a GREAT motor IMO… And its a EASY swap…
L8R
DG
i thought the higher in elevation you go, the slower your times were
Hmmm, well yes your right… But im running 15.9 @ a higher elevation Sooo, if i was running with you, then i would run lower times…
hehe…

B20B: I love it. One word: TORQUE! Immediately at low rpm’s my car starts to pull, which is great for city driving and auto-x. The only bad thing is this motor definitally isn’t good for drags and high end power. easily remedied with a vtec head and one of those $100 vtec conversion kits or with a new cam setup. Also the b20b was a lot healthier than my LS motor so it felt like transplanting a new heart (stronger and healthier) into the car.
Rundown: for a stock motor, b20b is a great car for daily driving and acceleration in the low/mid range. Good platform to work with in the future, a lot of potential. With mild cams and not too high of revving, you can safely keep the bottom end stock.
Thing I would do differently: put my crower valvetrain into the new head.

heard lots of good thing about the b20
but is there anybody here have a good opinion about a b20vtec?
is it really unreliable as some said…
i might just swap a b20 base, and keep my vtec head and all the parts that i already have on my 93gsr…
B20vtec is no more or less reliable than lsvtec. It is exactly the same operation. The only diff is the bore size. Lots of people are down on vtec conversions but if done properly and driven properly they are just as reliable as a stock rebuild. The problem is that many that do the conversion drive it like a vtec with a stock ls bottom end and then complain when the throw a rod. The ls bottom end is not designed to rev as high as a vtec so you have to make the proper mods to concider using the rpm that the vtec works best in. If you don’t make the mods then you keep the stock ls redline or suffer the consequences. It is that simple.
On another note higher compression is avail for B20’s. You just have to get aftermarket pistons. If you are planning turbo the stock B20 comp is good. If not then higher comp would be a good upgrade.
I have over 20k miles on my B20 since my swap. Runs and drives great and have had no problems. Been to the track once. Only got one run and spun all the way through 1st and 2nd. Ran a 16.9 @83mph. Only redeeming fact was I out ran the V8 early 90’s Camaro in the other lane. Got rained out so no other runs and that was the last race this season. I have the '96 JDM B20b with the low rise intake like Daver and the rest of the car is stock 91 rs inlcuding the intake and exhaust.
CRVT… Exactly, if built right, matained and drove properly, then its all good… My friends CRVT civic was a daily and it was built. But now hes sellin the car but keepin the motor and putin in GSR Crank and rods so he’ll be able to keep reving high for long periods of time (car touring and autoX) with it being safe(er) then with out them…
I belive like my friend tim does, as do others that the sleeves are fine for NA but, when it comes to FI on B20s then they do need resleeved… (if you boost above 7-9pds)
And remember when building any motor, i belive the key is TUNING TUNING TUNING! That right there is the best thing you can do for your motor for the longevity (sp?) of it…
This is all IMO… Take it with a grain of salt, and RESEARCH for yourself and findout…
GL!
