ive looked around and have heard a ton of different things. on HT, i dont know what to beleive.
I should be getting a b20 within the week JDM b20b…and i have questions.
Some say it is a bolt up affair, just swap IM, wiring harness, ecu, §§§§§ and go.
Others say i need to swap out the driverside engine mounting peice for the LS one as well as the crank pulley for the LS powersteering, also what is mentioned above.
you will need to swap the bracket with your ls. gen2 b-series motors are different. believe me, i ran into that issue when i bought mounts for a EF and tried to put them on a gsr motor. other than that, i have no experience with many newer motors. did u get the higher compression b20 or the lower? in japan they are all b20b. but as u can see in the link below, one of them (known as the b20z in USA) has a 9.6:1 compression and makes a little more power. why didnt you go to Noyan USA in VA to get the motor. u could’ve had it by now and u get to pick it out yourself. unlike HMO where some guy decides which engine you get… and, in most cases, in the end you pay less.
btw, please someone else answer these questions because i am also interested in this swap myself… mine would be high compression jdm b20b in a 93 RS. basically i want it to be a STOCK ls in there. using stock intake and exhaust, etc…
If you want one with the higher power, look for the high compression block. There are 2 things you can check. First, look for a green knock sensor under the intake manifold. If theres a knock sensor, its the higher power, higher compression block. Also, Look at the intake manifold, if its the square 'box" type, its also the same.
Those 2 things will tell you if you have the higher power, higher compression block.
It is a bolt up affair. I did this swap for another buddy of mine not too long ago.
If you chose not to buy an aftermarket intake manifold (ex: s2 or blox), then reuse the stock one. Everything that is on your original motor will go over to the B20.
You will ALSO NEED to take the drivers side mount and crank pulley as well. The belts are different lengths on both motors, thats why its required to swap over the crank pulley.
Basically, reuse everything off the old motor including pulley and mount.
i did a lot of research on HT and have found several helpful tips.
There where a TON of B20 variations.
8.8 comp they have the giraffe IM, normal 96-98 b20b
9.2 comp–some of these motors have the p8r head, the non vtec motor with vtec sized valves, some have 2 layer head gaskets, some have the LS intake mani’s
9.6 comp PHK pistons, resonator on top of the IM 99-00 motors B20z and some b20b’s0
the info on HMO is incorrect. go to NOYAN USA. they have all the right info and u can ask them questions before you buy. they have plenty in stock just about all the time. they are the largest importer of used japanese engines and transmissions on the east coast. they sell to places like JE Import Performance.
im assuming you would do a water pump and timing belt on the motor before dropping it in. (an intelligent person would). in order to get to those parts you need to take the crank pulley off anyway, so it shouldnt be that big of a hassle.
im assuming you are using a stock ys1 cable ls tranny, correct? you will need your stock T-Bracket also.
EDIT: in japan, they are ALL b20B. but, some are H/C, some are L/C. In USA, the H/C are b20Z. In the link i posted above, you can see how to tell the difference from the outside. This is how u know what you are buying. i know noyan wants $900 for l/c and $1000 for h/c jdm b20b. after you pay shipping from CA from the other motors, it comes out close enough. plus (my favorite part) you get to CHOOSE from a warehouse of engines exactly which one you want and ask them questions face to face.
b20 owns ls…
heres what i had to do…
-use the ls motor drivers side mount bracket on the b20
-everything obd0
-intake manifold distributor injectrs the whole 9 u get the deal
-ls exhaust manifold or aftermarket ehaders
-this is a tricky one take out the ls oil dipstick thingie and the dipstick ti self and put it on the 20 motor OR cute the tube on the b20 n use a ls dipstick to be accurate on your oil
-ls halfshaft
-ls alternator with b20 belt (ls belt too short)
that about it i believe
i have decided buy a High compression b20b from JDMcars.com in MD or Noyan motors. I will buy a Blox intake manifold, use my LS tb. ALso use my LS crank pulley. Have the timing betl changed as well as the water pump.
