op, if you don’t have a manual, get one. read it from beginning to end. but don’t just read it. UNDERSTAND it. anything you don’t understand, research until you do. you do that and you won’t need to rely on your buddy, or me, or anyone else on the forum. help is great sure. everybody needs it sometimes. but how can you qualify the help you’re being offered? you can’t know unless you question it and do your own research.
always start small. the basics. without the basics, you can not move forward
thank you guys ill check everything timing marks and jump the connector while doing this
im using cp7529 timing light from autozone how do i set it before using? and to make sure i am correct unplug the iacv while doing timing?
no, you don’t need to disconnect the iacv for timing set. read your vehicle manual, and read the manual for the light you have. should all be in there.
welfare didnt u just say a few post ago to disconnect the IACV???
so i did the timing and reconnect the 02 sensor, let it idle for about 10 min or so. drove around for a bit didnt notice hesitation at all yet so we ll see and thank u guys. hope i did ok lol
He said to disconnect the IACV for the idle adjustment… NOT the timing adjustment
u guys confused me. lol but i jumped the connector before setting timing with the timing light i posted pic of ^^^ i set it at 16.0 set the distributor on the white (the mark by itself i guess) hard to do it with power steering pump in the way
Errr… the distributor and power steering pump are on opposite ends of the motor lol.
You mean you set it at 16 on the white mark on the Crank Pulley?
yea 16 on the white mark on crank pulley. and hard to light the pulley up and to see the marks but the p/s pump is in the way lol
looks like i got the issue fixed. we ll see in the next few days to see how mpg does. And the distributor is still leaning on firewall so that means mechnically timing is off? the 2 cams looks like its lined up but im not sure if the crank is lined up too or not though, will check into it today.
to make it clear to myself if distributor is set towards all the way to firewall with the timing light set at 16 does that mean timing is off by tooth or two?
The distributor is IGNITION timing…
You have to line up the crank and the cams to check your mechanical timing.
thats what i mean if the ignition timing is all the way toward firewall that means my mechanical timing is off? hard to explain with my shitty english lol
EDIT: im trying to figure how timing works the ignition and mechanical. i dont have the car yet my gf is using it i will check into it as soon as she gets back lol
typically, the distributor really shouldn’t be maxed out. but if you were able to get the timing to 16*btdc, you’re fine. that’s all that really matters
yup crank was off by 2 tooth gonna align them tomorrow
you were still able to time it to 16*?
no not even, the cams was lined up pointing up fine but crank was off by 0ne or two tooth clockwise. and it runs fine while distributor is leaning towards firewall if i pull the distributor back to where it should be. it will be showing the hesitation like timing is off i guess i have to figure how to get crank pulley tool and to do it cuz if i get it timed up i think i can get it to set at 16* does it make sense?
no not even, the cams was lined up pointing up fine but crank was off by one or two tooth clockwise.
Exactly how mine was. When I lined up the cams and locked them with the pins, the crank pulley was off clockwise (going by what was left of the white tdc mark). I even took the pulley off, recreated the marks with some touch up paint in the notches (which were still plain to see on the crank when off), and put it back on, to make sure I was not looking at some piece of dirt.
I wasn’t, it was off by a good 15-20 deg. and the engine still ran like that.
you can adjust the mechanical timing without removing the crank pulley. you just need to back the tensioner bolt off, pull on the belt to give slack, then tighten the tensioner bolt, then slip the belt off the cam and make your adjustment. there is an access hole for the tensioner bolt in the lower cover, for this very reason. the access hole is behind a plug
