b20bhybrid

Hey all! I got a quick question. What would happen if I slapped a b18a1 head on a b20b block, a y1s1 tranny and b18c5 intake manifold and exhaust header and put it in to my g2? would that do anything for me? or would that just give me a headache? please let me know what you guys think of this so i Know whether or not to proceed with the surgery. Everyone here on my end thinks it will work, but i wanted to ask the experts first  talk to ya’ll l8r

You’re better off with the b20b head than the b18a head. Also a b18c5 IM won’t fit on a non-vtec head from what I understand.

1st off, the B20 head = the B18 head. Just get a B20 long block. As for your manifold, pick up a Skunk2 LS manifold.

like the others said.

the b20 head is the same as the b18b head (which is slightly better than the b18a head). So, use the whole b20 longblock. but use your intake manifold. or use an aftermarket one like the skunk2…because again, like the others said, the itr one won’t fit.

the itr header will only fit your car if you have a 92-93 and are willing to pay a little extra for some modifications (flange stuff). Make sure you’re getting a jdm header though, the usdm ones aren’t really worth the money… you’d be better off just saving and buying something better.

Cool, I appreciate (sp?) the info. How much HP does the b20b engine have? also I heard that the b20b is stroked more than the b18a, is that correct? I’m trying to make my car at least 200 hp without vtec, nos, or turbo. what route should I take? Thanks for all the help

the b20 is a bored out b18a/b, not a stroked b18a/b. Stock bore on most all b series engines (b16a, b17a, b18a/b, b18c, b16b) is 81mm. The b20 has an 84mm bore, the stroke is identical to the b18a/b.

200bhp with a non vtec motor is going to be difficult, but i’m sure it can be done and still have an at least sort of streetable car. but 200whp in a non vtec motor is going to give you a motor that you are definitely not going to want to put in a car you’re using for a street car… it will be race only.

why do you want to stay away from vtec? the cost really isn’t that much more, sometimes it can be fairly comparable depending on which routes you take. and you can definitely get 200whp on a VERY streetable engine.

for hp numbers on the b20 do a search… there are two versions of the b20 (they have different compression ratios) and they have different hp numbers.

Well… the reason I wanted to stay away from vtec is because of bragging right really  I supposed the best route for me to go is to drop a b16a1 in there so i don’t have to do any clutch mods. I should be able to generate about 200hp off of a b16 a1 right? I am working on a budget as well. I can pick up a b16a1 off of www.hondamotorsonline.com for about 499, that includes ecu, wiring harness long block and sensors. i looked at the site and the transmission they sell with the b16a1 is the y1,s1,j1 tranny, which i think is the one i have on my car now, cuz that is what is on the tag on the transmission housing. anyways, i still defiently want to do an all motor application but you brought up a good point about being streetable. Do you think that is the best thing to do then? Keep in mind that I don’t have enough skill/knowledge to pull off an ls/vtec  anyways, thanks for all the help so far.

well, you have some more research to do… a lot more research.

first off, there is no such thing as a b16a1. What you are referring to is a 1st generation jdm b16a (there is no 1 —jdm engines don’t have numbers at the end).

getting 200bhp out of a b16a won’t be too hard, but it’ll take a lot of mods. And getting 200whp will be fairly difficult and take a lot of cash… here bigger displacement would help quite a bit.

you are going to want to get the tranny with the motor. the tranny in your car is not the same as the tranny that will come with the motor. the label is the same, but the gearing inside isn’t. The vtec trannies have shorter gears, which basically means you’ll go faster. long gears + vtec = sucky! long gears + vtec + low displacement of b16a = really sucky! So, definitely get the tranny, you won’t regret it.

and what do you mean by clutch mods??? you can put any b series engine into your car without doing any “clutch mods”

personally my suggestion would be to get on the net and read as much as you can about other people’s setups, prices, advantages and dissadvantages of different motors, ease of swaps… learn as much as you can before commiting yourself to one path.

here are some dyno graphs you can check out for starters: http://www.importreview.com/d_1.6.html and definitely go to the teg tips and download and read the engine swap guide… its essential reading material for anyone doing a swap.

Thanks alot. I’ll let you know what I come up with.

i think he meant cable to hydro…when he said clutch mods…because if you put a new b16 the si motor i believe it is a hydro clutch…

Yeah, when I said “clutch Mods” I mean swapping out a cable clutch for a hydro clutch.
