i was heading from work when my car backfired quite a bit. then it started doing this. idles rough and drives ruff… uhh it sucks.

Like the above poster stated.
Check to see if your timing belt skipped a few teeth. This could also lead to bent valves. So rip off some covers and check your timing marks.
