bad starter or ignition system?

whats up guys, im trying to figure out why my car wont start… ive done a good amount of research and self diagnosis but still cant really narrow it down to a pin point.

car wont start. got a new main relay and still no start… i turn the key and everything comes on. fuel pump comes on and starts to prime… so thats all good!
but when i turn the key…all i get is a “click” i can hear the starter making a single click noise, but it just wont turn and start! sometimes it will start whenever it wants to… id say 2 out of 10 times it will start.

so then i went and jumped the starter with a speaker wire… connected one wire to the starter and touch it with the + terminal of the battery and it starts right up!! so that means the starter is still good right???

do you guys think i might need a new ignition switch? or could it possibly be a distributor problem? this is my daily driver… and i always have to start my car by jumping the starter… really embarassing because people look at me and wonder if im stealing the car!!

Depending if you have an auto or 5speed, it could be a few things…

here is the schematic to help you.

I had the same problem! My car didnt wana start at all anymore. I had to push da car and start it. Push-to-start. Get me? Well anyways i changed da starter and it wasnt even the problem. I was thinkin it was the ignition switch or the main relays but i took it to my moms mechanic and he said it was the clutch cable pin or sumthing like dat. What he did was took off the clutch and he shaved the screw for the clutch or sumthing. Basicly he said dat the pin for the clutch or sumthin wasnt interacting w da other pin and so dats why da car didnt start. Idk if i made any sense kuz i wasnt payin attention, i was too excited to have my sexy beast up and running again lol. Hope this helps for anyone! Go to a mechanic!

Fasho dat stuf happnz m0r den u thnk!

damn! that freakin’ sucks!! lol i just replaced my clutch like 3 months ago too!.. last night i was at walmart… i went to my car and tried to start it and of course, it didnt start. so i popped my hood and jumped the starter to the battery again. and i didnt know there was a person inside of a car that was parked in front of me. she was like wtf??? did he just steal hisown car?! haha i just hoped inand drove off.

Haha this awesome

You might want to check the switch that’s. By the clutch pedal, usually if the stopper has broken off it won’t start cause the car thinks the clutch is NOT pressed in, also you might want to check your connection right at the starter itself. Mine pops off at times and won’t start so I just slide back into place and it cracnks right up. Also you might want to check your connections around in car fuses. One last think you could do is install an external starter switch, where you put he key onto the on position and press the button to engage the starter ((hope that makes sense))

That’s all I can think off for your issue, and if you really think its your starter takes it off and take it to your local auto parts store like Auto Zone, O’reily, etc, etc and have them tested, its FREE!!

I have this same problem but mine didn’t use to do it when it was auto, after the manual swap shit went down hill. My car probably starts 1 out of 10, I ussually have to jump the starter. But I just replaced my ign switch and nothing changed so am looking into a starter switch which I don’t want to do but its annoying and embarrasing every time.

I had this exact problem, replaced the ignition switch and have been good since.

i wanna say get a new starter buddy

He said his starter kicks over when he bypasses it by jumping with a wire. This means that its not getting a signal from the car which according to the schematic that bitter melon posted above, means its either your ignition switch which is more common of a problem or a bad starter relay which is located under the dash in the middle-right side. Put a multimeter or test light on the starter solenoid’s input wire and try cranking it with someone watching the light/meter. If it lights up you know your getting signal and it must be a bad solenoid. If not the problem is inside the car somewhere. Repeat this process at the starter relay on the input wire from the ignition switch. Keep moving up the chain til you pinpoint the problem. Hope this helps.

I would be suspect of the signal coming from the ignition switch to the solenoid on the starter. First though, I would clean your battery terminals even if they look good. Also check the negative battery lead grounds and that the positve lead connection on starter is good. You never know, sometimes one can get lucky and fix it with minimal cost and effort. Make sure your battery is fully charged. If that doesn’t work, using a voltmeter check the voltage at terminal end of blk/wht at starter solenoid (disconnect wire first). Check for voltage while ignition switch is in start position. I would expect around 12 volts there with ignition switch in start position. If you have considerably less than 12 volts than you are dropping voltage across a high resistance somewhere along the circuit. Looking at the wire diagram, there could be high resistance in the starter switch, starter relay and a few connectors. The clutch interlock could also be a problem but wouldn’t suspect it unless you don’t get any voltage at the starter solenoid terminal. You may need to isolate and test resistance through each component to find out where the voltage is being lost. Good luck and I hope it is just dirty battery terminals or a loose ground or starter terminal.

damn… thanks guys for ALL OF UR HELP! i still havent gotten the chance to diagnose anything yet due to a 9-6 work schedule :frowning: plus wife and 2 babies! lol my day off is thursday so hopfully i can start diagnosing! i tried today, but it gets dark by 5 over here… ill be checking back for updates regularly for more tips and advices from u guys!
