I’m in need for a new battery. Right now I have red optima battery. This is my second one. The first lasted two years the the present one now can’t hold a charge. I had to jump start it a couple of times already. I just read some reviews on optimas and it seems that it doesn’t stand up to their name. According to a optima distributer, 9 out of 10 were replaced after two to three years no matter what color you have.
Are the ones at autozone any good? Duralast. Any battery suggestions? Thanks
try the odyssey 680 i have that one its alot smaller then stock and even the optima dont know how good it preforms over time tho just replaced my stock one recently.
forget odyssey its way too expensive and overpriced just for its brand name…while i was doing some research odyssey PC680 battery only has 220 CCA I believe and costs like 130 bucks…after some digging around I found this battery which has 270 CCA…and roughly is the same size as the odyssey and less than half the price…I am running this battery in my car for over a month now with on start up issues and runs perfect…here is the link…I got mine for 48 shippe a month ago and the prices have already gone up on these by over 25 dollars…I hope this helps
I’ve had good results with DieHard batteries. My dad had one that lasted 12 years of daily driving and was still good when the car died. Sears and K-Mart carry them.
I know your pain of the Optima Red Top. I’m on my 3rd in 2 years.

Which diehard battery did you dad get? Example: gold, platuim, north , south. I’m on a tight budget of 100 bucks under. they seem pretty expensive.
I honestly can’t remember but it was the standard looking black one with white lettering. He purchased it like 20 years ago. Knowing my dad he got the cheaper one (basic North) since we live in a cold climate. You should be able to get the basic one for your budget. When my battery dies and is out of warranty I’ll probably go with a Platinum after seeing this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7bOF94Iq70&feature=player_embedded
I can’t see running anything but an Optima ever again (unless I need a lightweight battery). I’ve had 3 optimas in the past 10yrs. One is literally 10yrs old and still works fine (6yrs of daily driving, 3yrs of sitting in a car that was never driven, and one year in another member’s car cause I gave it away), one is probably 6yrs and also works fine but hasn’t really been used (it spend 99% of it’s time sitting in the garage), and the other is 3yrs old and is in my daily driver. I’ve put the one in my daily driver thru hell and back. Hot, cold, all different elevations, hours playing the stereo w/ the car off… never skipped a beat. Regardless of brand I’m never going back to a “serviceable” battery again, only sealed for me.
I have the odyssey 680 I do like it but yes it does cost a lot more an i know it needs a special battery charger to charger it. so my question here is does the optima battery need a special charger to charge it maybe that why they go bad so easy just a thought
Since when does the PC680 need a special charger? I’ve used a battery tender and a normal battery charger on mine and it’s fine. A friend has used his normal charger on his and it’s also fine.
If you go to the web site an read the manuel it will explain it to you as it was to me but here is a little info on it (A 12V, 3 amp trickle charger can also be left connected to the battery if it is kept in storage for extended periods
or if the battery is subject to parasitic loads during storage. The trickle charge voltage measured at the battery
terminals must be between 13.5V and 13.8V.) other wise it will mess up the battery as I found the hard way an had to buy another battery so you need a charger that with in those number an I think there was a diffent set of number if you were going to charge it for a few hours but I always do the slow charge
I asked myself the same question about if we should use special chargers for optimas. I never used one on an optima. But I you tubed “what charger is best for an optima”. It showed an official “optima guy” and he said any charger will work.
:bang: Youtube is about as reliable of a source as Wikipedia. Just using “any charger” might not work and potentially can damage the battery. According to Optima you need an AGM charger and here is the specific requirements depending on witch model you have: http://www.optimabatteries.com/product_support/charging.php
According to the Optima CTEK chargers are the recommended brand. http://www.optimabatteries.com.au/Products/CtekCharger.aspx I purchased the CTEK 7002 mostly b/c is has a recondition mode that can revive from dead and extend overall life. CTEK Multi US 7002 – smartercharger.com I leave mine connected most of the time with the quick disconnect leads.
I guess the guy was an imposter optima guy in the video. And he was lying about all those universal chargers that will work for optimas. The optima website video also said, “So any charger will work”.
