dammit i hate this… every time I get around to changing plugs, i’ve heard every miracle story there is…
… right now i’m running the Bcpr6es-11 and they are fine 300 mile tanks, car whoops ass and everything… my dilemma as always … should i buy the damm platinums that the factory recommends …?
– then to confuse me even more … local speed shop recommends zfr6f-11… dammit isn’t that the LS ‘severe condition’ plug… i swear… … i pull out to BCPR’s and match them to these ZFR6F’s… the ZFR’s have a longer electrode/ceramic combo by about 1/4 inch so it sits deeper in the head closer to the piston
… stock b17/stock compression… will this b*tch touch my piston at 8200rpm…?.. i ain’t puttin them in till i hear from someone…
Interesting…they sit closer to the pistons? Dan recommends ZFR7F11s for my LS (12.4:1 CR)…
Dan, please more info!

Max,
Any clearance problem with them? Have you the plugs out and checked?
Thanks,
Oz
i talked to .J. about plugs for my motor (the b17a, not my stock one) and he said to get the non plats. I’m pretty sure thats even what he’s running (could be wrong though). I’m not as plug number savy as you guys… but he told me to get “BR 7’s”

I’m not runnig them currently, but will be…
I would never run platinum plugs again. What a waste of money. For you VTEC guys with average compression, a NGK BRK6E-11 is a great plug. or for the higher compression guys, an NGK BCPR7E-11 works well.
Although I don’t know why, but on the 90-91 LS Integras the factory recommends the BCPR5E-11 plug and on the 92-93 they recommend the ZFR5F-11 (which does dip lower into the combustion chamber). I am unsure if the ZFR5F-11 will hit the pistons in your car or not Max with your .050" off of your head (although I highly doubt it. I didn’t even think about that at the time. It may just be safer for you to run the BCPR7ES-11. Heat range is the most important thing. Too hot of a plug with too high of compression = detonation/preignition. Too cold of a plug = fuel fouled out plugs, running too rich. Not a good condition either.
Slick: run a BKR6E-11. It’s the best plug for us B-series VTEC guys unless you’re running higher than 11.5:1.
This may help a lot of you out there…

so the BRK6E-11’s will work out well w/ my 11:1? or should i step it up and go for the BCPR7E-11’s?

Dan,
Why the disdain for plats?

Oz
Colin, I was running the BCPR7ES-11 plugs for awhile, but they were getting fuel fouled (running too rich). So I jumped up to BKR6E-11. Which actually fits the engine better. The BCPR7ES-11 is taller on the top side where the spark plug wire attaches (about 3mm taller). Well, that causes the spark plug wire not to seat all the way. Kind of irritating. I’m at 11.2:1 and running fine with the BKR6E-11 gapped to .44, unless the idiots at Texaco put frickin’ 87 octance in my tank :bang:.
Oz, the platinums are mainly there to make a car look more appealing due to the extended duration between spark plug change intervals. But I have to tell you, for $50 a plug better be ready to do a lot more than just spark
. I found I was getting incomplete fuel burn as well as making less power with the NGK Platinums than with the standard or V-power NGK copper plug. And at $1.30 a plug, you can’t beat NGK coppers. So that’s my reasoning. Some will agree with me, some won’t. But you’ll find most engine builders prefer NGK coppers.

Out of complete curiousity, Dan. What were you using to figure this out? I’m quite interested myself.
Thanks,
Oz
The power part was felt and it was pretty obvious. I’m not kidding here. And as far as the incomplete fuel burn goes, when i pulled my ITR motor apart to put the JDM ITR pistons in, the pistons had uneven burn across them and almost looked washed out. That and trying to pass emissions with the platinum plugs was impossible.
thanks Dan, folks have recomended that plug b4 (BKR6E-11) jus a P-I-A to locate … guess i must hunt again … i’ve actually stayed away from the 7’s for my stock motor… but further mods will definitely see me use those …
maybe we can post that NGK chart in teg tips … ?

yeah, just today i called up acura to see what prices were like on them and they couldn’t find them in their book of plugs.
The local auto shop out here carries the BKR6E-11s in stock. So if you guys need them let me know and I’ll pick some up for you. About $7 for a set of 4.
What about Denso Iridium’s? I’m going to bed…

Dan,
I’ve always been under the assumption that plats help with emissions rather than harm it. Are you telling me that the stock ignition is not powerful enough to fully utilize plats?
Regards,
Oz
Stock ignition is fine to utilize the platinums. But in my experience (two cars) they didn’t burn the fuel as completely as the coppers did. The coppers make my car run “cleaner” if you will due to the more complete burn.
Dan, would you happen to know what i should run with my B20? I figured the LS plugs would work but i just wanna make sure. Last time i changed plugs, autozone didn’t have a list of NGK plugs for the CR-V.
B20 should run the same plugs as the 92 LS, GS, which is the ZFR5F-11.
Denso Iridiums? No comment yet?
