Bent valve can cause ticking?

Well since my bolt that holds on the adjusting screw unscrewed while driivng, and i think it bent a valve…would it cause ticking? i adjusted my valves and they’re in the right specs…

Does it tick faster when you rev it up ?

Bent valves usually cause cracked valve guides. You’ll have to take the head off and have the guide replaced. I don’t recommend driving with it like that either.

Yea, after i did my valve adjustment, it still ticks. And the ticking is dependent on the rpms, so when i rev it, it ticks faster.

Dayuiz, would a cracked guide cause the arm to tick against my camshaft? I’m still not too sure if i bent the valve, probably did.

oh yea and engine runs normal, i don’t feel any power loss…weird.

check your compression, bent valve probably won’t seal well…

ok…how about, what are the effects of a bent valve?

Well, if you are not getting a good seal, power will be lacking because you will not have 4 cylinders, but more like 3. So, if you still have power, I would think it is not a bent valve. There is another string looking at the same issue and I think the end result is dirty fuel injectors…

yes, i can understand that power lacks if i’m running like 3 cylinders. but all 4 cylinders are runnig. Its just that ticking noise.

I highly doubt its my injectors because the ticking started when my bolt got unthreaded off of the adjusting bolt/rocker arm, and was in my valvetrain. And after i fished out the bolt, rescrewed it onto the adjusting bolt/rocker arm, and then did a valve adjustment on that valve, it still clicks.

My main question is, what damage would a really really loose rocker arm with no adjustment bolt holding it against the camshaft and my valve spring being unheld cause to my engine?

Did the rocker actually fall out of place or did the nut just come loose? Nothing is going to happen if the nut comes off. All that nut does is hold the adjuster in place and keep it from backing off. The only way a valve will bend is if it comes in contact with the piston by way of a spring binding or something causing it to bind broken timign belt… etc. It’s highly unlikely that you bent a valve. Make sure you’re doing the valve adjustment with the engine completely cold. Adjustements that are too tight will tick also.

Thank you elmer for your response. That clears up alot for me.

When I took off the valve cover and saw the bolt was missing from the adjusting screw, the rocker arm was still intact and on the adjusting screw’s body. And the paddle part of the arm was still under the camshaft and was still seated ontop of the valve spring retainer. So, no it didn’t fall off.

Would a damaged or bent rocker arm be considerable noticeable to an eye’s view? And would my retainer be damaged?

Also my timing is a bit off, the camgears do not line up(the two indentations) all the way good. When i changed my cam seals, i was lazy and didn’t line it up carefully when at TDC.

I think i will first realign the cam gears to TDC properly, then try my valve adjustment again. Come to think of it, i think that’s whats causing me to run rich also.

Yes, the times i worked on my valvetrain, the engine was cold, it was let to stand for couple hours before i actually opened up the valve cover to work.
