I dont like splicing wires, thats ghetto. So I modified the circuit.
I took out the foglight switch shown here:
Then I turned the 2 white bulbs (shown in the above picture) counter clockwise then pried them out with a knife, next I stuck the knife in the back to pop off the 4 clips holding on the back of the switch, finally I pulled out the circuit board. Heres what it looks like:
Then I soldered together the 2 positive connectors shown here:
One thing I forgot to take a pic of was the breaking off of the old power connector (on the harness). But I made a neato diaghram show here (Cut off the prong circled in red):
if you take out the bezel ( that covers a/c controls and vents and gauges ) the switches come with it. then you can get to the metal clips from behind. this is the only way i know how to do it.
really i just use a flathead. preferrably a thinner one, and just pop out the bottom and it should slide out easily. i guess like the stupid coin tray some have better luck than others.
as for the soldering, isnt splicing teh wires but finishing with solder just as good =P
I used an old butterknife to get my switched out from the dash. I was going to try a screwdriver, but I then remembered an old car I did this on and it fukked up the dash pretty good. Using the butter knife (one that mom won’t miss!), gives you more surface area and less chance of denting/scraping the plastic of the dash. It’s also thinner than most screwdrivers.
That’s a good idea. I am currently installing aftermarket fog lights and was planning on using another stock switch (gotta love the RS…Empty holes everywhere).
after you take the switch cover off, use plyers and pull the whole switch out. Pull straight out after you get a grip on the switch. I have seen if differently for the RS. The fog light switch is like on the other side of the dash board away from the defogger.
If you tilt the steering wheel all the way down, you can stick your fingers in between the steering column and the dash. You can get your fingers behind a couple of the switches. If one of them happens to be the foglight switch (different trim levels have the switch in different holes), you just push it from the back and it pops out. If you can’t get to the foglight switch, then pop out whatever you can, then stick your fingers in the hole of the one you just popped out, and pop out the one next to it. Repeat until you get to the foglight switch.
Guarranteed, No scratches. I’ve done this on a bunch of cars (Foglight re-wiring party at every South Fla meet).

That’s why Ryan is the West Coast Fog Light Switch Finger Man. He did three cars on July 4th. :salute:

exactly what i did too, helps if you pop it a little with a screwdriver then push from behind. you dont need to take out the panel thats too much work.
I cannot get this method to work! I followed everything exactly, but all my lights still function the exact same way. The only thing I noticed is that the diagram for cutting off the prong seems backwards, but I’m pretty sure I cut off the right one. Can anyone help? I have a 1990 RS, with my defogger and foglights on opposite sides. TIA.
