Big problem with front suspension! HELP!

Hey everyone! I have this problem with my G2. I bought the car completely stock and lowered it about 3 inches, using ractive coilovers (the yellow ones). I also kept the stock shocks (couldnt afford performance ones at the time). Anyway, my problem is this… When im driving, and I hit a bump in the road (even little ones) the front shocks bottom out ALOT! like im talking, it sounds like my whole frame is hitting the road! its disgusting and i want to cry every time it happens!! :frowning: . Well anyway im hoping some of you guys could help me out, because maybe you have had the same problem as me. I cant continue driving like this! The impact of the hit even ruined one of my motor mounts! thanks guys. -Dave

Maybe it’s your bump stops… did you cut them in half?

Off-topic: Where abouts in Toronto are you located? Also, are you coming to the meet on May 5th???

well ya the shop cut them in half with a hack saw i believe. As a matter of fact, when I look at the assembly, I dont see the bump stops there… maybe they completely broke apart? i dunno… but whats the purpose of cutting them anyway? maybe i should just get new ones altogether? HELP!

-Dave

PS- yup i would be interested in the meet

eh…

how about raising it back up?

gosh…
that will fix the problem… NO?

3 inches dropp… man…

He does have a point there… our cars aren’t exactly designed for such low “lowering” cuz if you notice our cars are pretty short and thin and well… clearing the wheel well gap already makes the car VERY low to the ground…

well id rather not raise it back up. I know of G2 integras the same height as mine (3 inch drop) and they ride clost to perfect. Thanks for the responses so far… the car is up on stands right now and im goin crazy tryin to figure out the problem. If i bought KYB shocks, would they not bottom out? -Dave

Maybe the coilovers are on backwards???

I don’t have any experience with coilovers, but usually the front is stiffer than the rear.

If you have them reversed, then the softer spring rate, at such a low drop, up front, would explain the bottoming out?

I have a 3" drop on my stock shocks ride sucks… I want better shocks but I want a CF hood too, can’t afford both =(

Anyways… stiffer springs go in the front… if you shocks are blown… I assume it would bottom out more…

you’ve already found and stated the problem, dave. stock shocks are not up to the task of dampening the extreme lowering. i would raise your car back up or do the lowering the right way with quality pieces.

Stock shocks, meaning 10 year old shocks? How many miles on them? You’d probably see a difference by replacing them with KYB GR2’s (basically OEM for our tegs), but you’d wear them out fast with the 3" drop. AGX’s would fair better, but aren’t guaranteed past 1.8" drops. And they aren’t made for 3" drops.
Prepare to spend some cash, and get some performance shocks and a real stiff ride. But at least it won’t bottom out anymore.

well the problem wouldnt be with the shocks or drop really…i used to have vis vspec coilovers with stock shocks and my car was slammed more then 3 inches and my car rode nice…my suggestion would be to sell your coilovers and get a better set of coilovers and get some bumpstops…without the bump stops your shocks are gonna bottom and its always gonna make that loud bang noise…oh and since your dropped that low did you get and alignment yet…how about a camber kit…just some things for you to think about

Any dropped car needs a camber kit. After you lower your integra, you’re going to eventually have negative camber and while that’s good for handling, it’s going to eat the insides of your tires faster than you can probably afford…especially if you’ve bought softer performance tires. Start off with the performance shocks and then invest in a camber kit. Don’t buy good tires till you’ve fixed your camber.

I would suggest raising the car back up, and waiting until you can afford to buy shocks that were made to handle such a low drop. Forget about buying better coilovers for the moment, your main source of the problem sound like your shocks. Obviouosly they were not meant to handle such extreme conditions. How long have you been dropped for? With a drop like that, a person would be lucky to make it 6 months before they blow out. It’s not worth it to screw up other components of your suspension. Save up and get a good set of shocks…that’s what I did. Anyway, hope I could help.

well they are stock shocks, but they where brand new since last year. Monroe Sensatrac is what they are. The day I installed them was ok, but after a few weeks it started banging again… So im not sure… Does anyone know of a good lowering shock for the G2? KYB AGX maybe?

You basically wore out your shocks real fast.

Here’s an analogy:
Imagine two guys, both conditioned athletes. One has skinny legs but is strong. The other is strong as well but his joints and legs are better. As they run down the street, they both take the bumps and sticks on the road surface pretty well.

But now imagine if you started kicking them in the knees…as their running.

Understand?..I thought you would.

Glad I could help.

true… I understand your analogy about the athletes… so what are my final solutions to this problem? I want to keep my drop, so what would you say I do to make my “knees” stronger.

question

if you want a good combo shocks and coilovers, go for kyb adjusable gas shocks and skunk2 coilovers, i work at a shop and we put them in a lot of cars already.

If your on a budget I would recomend at least AGX’s up front, and try not to keep a 3 inch drop. If you want the drop save up some cash and get proper shocks and coils. Sorry can’t recommend any because I’ve been shopping for stuff for a maximum 2 inch drop. Probably gonna choose what was mentioned, Skunk2 with AGX’s up front and try to get away with my GR2’s in back.

to solve the problem raise ur car up!!! the lower the stiffer…bumpity bump

well if u want to keep it that low then u gotta put out about 8-11 for the nex system check out golden apples website. they are fully adjustable and they come as a strut/spring combo. i help put them on a friends car. for as low as it is its still a comfortable ride. oh not to mention full energy suspention kit, and camber kit, sway bars front and back, struts bars all the way around. if you wnat to do it might as well do it right the first time.
