Blown Head Gasket...

I’m wondering if anyone knows what kind of damage I could do to my engine running it with a blown head gasket for approx 2hrs. It did NOT overheat at all in those 2 hrs…temp stayed right where it always is the entire time. Just ran like crap on 1 dead cylinder.

i had the same problem when i first brought my integra… coolant can leak into the combustion chamber and dillout the oil so your causing immediate engine damage your pretty lucky it didnt sieze up on u… wanna hear something weird? my engine with the blown head gasket had way better pick up than the new engine thats in my integra! wanna hear something else< the old engine had better gas miliage! arrrggghhh y meeee!!! i start’n to hate g2i’s!!! anywayz hope dat helped…

"coolant can leak into the combustion chamber and dillout the oil so your causing immediate engine damage your pretty lucky it didnt sieze up on u… "

errr… no. Coolant that seeps into the combustion chamber will not dilute the oil and cause immediate seizure… =/
It will turn into steam, and cause no other harm really.
In larger quantities it will make your car misfire slightly…
and if it were to basically DUMP into the combustion chamber in HUGE quantities (larger quantities than a blown headgasket woud ever allow) it would fill up the chamber, and the engine would hydrolock… but this will NOT happen with a blown headgasket.
It can cause damage if coolant gets into the opiling system. And the other problem is that, with a blown headgasket, you are pressurizing the cooling system via combustion…

so in other words I can’t really do much damage to the engine itself…but will damage the coolant system? Could I not make short runs (say to the parts store and back) won’t be that bad. And could I not avoid pressurizing the coolant system by leaving the rad cap loose…not off but to the point where it lets pressure off?

Leaving the radiator cap loose? Eh…if you have to I guess, but be careful. The radiator cap is designed to blow off at a certian psi, around 13 I think. To be honest, I’m not totally sure what the purpose of that pressure rating is, but its there for a reason. If you have to drive like that, don’t go very far and don’t drive very hard.

I would be concerned with coolant getting into the cylinder. Ovbiously this isn’t good and water/antifreeze can’t be good for your cylinder walls and piston head. I’m sure you know this and that you’ve already got time set aside to try to fix this problem, but I had to say it anyway.

My suggestion to you: Try some Duct Tape! Just unplug your spark plug, find someone with small hands and get them into your combustion chamber and tape up that pesky leak!!!

ducktape…wtf Steve?? lol

An experienced auto mechanic told me that coolant which may make its way into the oil sump can damage all bearings in your engine. It won’t kill your engine immediately, but the life of the bearings will be significantly reduced. If your oil ever turns milky it means you got coolant in there. If you got enough coolant into the combustion chamber it could very easily blow your engine. Good luck with your car.

Ouch…that dosen’t sound good :stuck_out_tongue:
My oil isn’t milky yet…or bubbly looks like normal oil…guess the oil’s only going out into the coolant…not visaversa yet.

yea… i got a blown gasket too, oil is leaking into all 4 cylinders but they are all still running. my shop teacher told me that if i have a blown gasket, you’ll see white smoke from your exhaust, especially if it cold. also… if you coolant starts getting contaminated with oil or vice versa. i’ll been driving with the blown gasket for a while, and i even still race it sometimes, lol. nothing really bad yet, and just keep an eye on your oil levels.

That sounds more like an oil leak than a blown headgasket. With a blown headgasket you would notice a considerable loss in power. If you lost all four Cylinders, you would have a hard time beating my brothers 1.5 liter 70hp civic being pushed by my 80 year old great grandmother.

well…drained my oil and coolant. Oil’s fine except for the fact that it was really low and pretty black. The coolant when in the bottle I drained it into was very murky…it was still green but it had a definet black tinge to it. Cars going to be parked probably until January sometime or longer :(:dead: :frowning:

Tom,
It still sounds like it could be something else. I know your engine burned oil pretty bad as is, but hmmm…

Coolant doesn’t evaporate. So I’m thinking if it were to get into the cylinders, it would be pushed out of the exhaust valves, but having a waterish liquid is always bad on internal parts of the engine.

I was looking on ebay and they have engines for about 400-500 bucks. Should swoop on one of those and just swap the biotch asap. Then that way you can build up ur b18a, or hmm

Actually you want a b20 and they had one for about 700ish on ebay last time I checked.

But I’ll call my dad when I get off of work. I forgot to ask him the prob when I talked to him last night.

well…it looks like it is a head gasket. Theres definetly oil in the coolant, 1 dead cylinder, my coolant wasn’t very low and for all I know I could have been burning the coolant off because I wasn’t too concerned with watching my tail pipe.
If your dad has any other idea’s I’m open to suggestion
right now it looks like I’m either going to try and pick up another engine…or I’m going to just pull mine and rebuild it.
