Body Sanding. GRIT help

ok i’ve been all over the internet about this and it seems everywhere i go i get different answers and its rather getting annoying. im going to start sanding on some stuff on my car but the thing is what grit should i start with. i want to do all the sanding by myself to save a little bit of money. can you guys please help me or give me a good website with some sanding processes. like what to start with and what to end with grit wise. any information is much useful thanks

I used 220 with my DA sander. My paint was in good shape.
My dad used 150 on his truck due to the bad shape his truck was in.

^he’s gonna have to prime everything he sands if he does it like that.

I’m just gonna say that i’m the head painter at my shop and ive been painting for 3 years. And im assuming u wanna do all the prep work urself so u can just bring it into a shop for them to mask up and paint. And im also assuming ur gonna getting it painted with base/clear not single stage since its basically absolete in the trade.

If ur prepping ur car for paint(not primer) sand 400-800Grit. If ur using DA u can use 400 if ur doing it by hand 600 is wat is prefered.(hand sanding with 400 could cause deep sand scratches that cant be covered by paint ei. silver and gold)

If ur priming id use 320-400 anything higher than 400 primer won’t stick. Now u only really need to prime if theres bondo or big patches of bare metal showing and if ur doing anytype of bodywork, other than that primer isnt really needed.

U dont need to start with one grit and end with another cause its a waste of time. Sand everything down with 600 and u should be fine.

what about for rusted/ rust out areas?

if its just surface rust 180-320 is fine till the rust is out(id use 180-220) If its rust all the way through ur kinda fucked.
