So, for the past few days I have been trying to replace the cylinder camshaft seal(I guess that is the name). In order to do so, I removed the camshaft bearing number 6 exhaust. While tightening the bolt, the ones outside the valve cover, one snapped in half leaving once piece that I took out by hand and the other piece stuck flush with the head. I eventually got it removed and obtained a new bolt. The second time I tried to tighten it, the other one outside the head snapped, same exact scenario. I had that one removed and replaced. Now, the third time I try to install it, I torque the bolt inside the head with 25 in-lb and they both snap. I am starting to think these bolts are one time use or just old? What are your thoughts?
Where did you get the new bolts?
Well, they are indeed old and brittle… I’ve seen cam-rail bolts stretch and no longer hold proper torque.
Also, if your torque wrench isn’t dead-on, it is very easy to over-torque a bolt so small. 25in-lb is barely 2ft-lb… I’m betting its a little of both scenarios.

X2… it is never adviseable to re use previously torqued bolts they tend to stretch, and over time definitely lose their tensile strength when removed…
