I’m thinking of buying another DA off this guy on a local forums and was wondering how hard it would be to remove bondo. I guess the guy before him removed the side molding and bondo’ed over it but never painted them or anything.
just use a paint stripper and have at it. A paint stripper on a drill or with air tools will get it off without harming the metal. Unless he f’d the metal up then u will be fine.
By the look of the pics it looks like he just slapped on a shit-ton of bondo so i should be good. Im going to talk to the guy as soon as i can and i’ll get a better look at it then
why would you take it off, it doesnt look like he did a bad job on it, but again this is only a pic.
Maybe because it’s probably 3/4" thick? Just a guess.
You could always wait until a very cold winter day, wash the car, and hope it all cracks off in one giant lump.
Air compressor, dual action sander and 40 grit paper. And lots of time.
i used to have the same like this too.i hated it.
so i decided to do what you are thinking off.taking it off.
so what i used was.alot.i mean alot of coarse sand paper.
started sanding it down by hand…did not work for sh*t.
so i bought a electric sander.helped alot.but guess how long it took for just the driver’s side?took me and my friend 3 hours a day for 5 days at the most for sanding it down…
so for the other side. we wanted to try the way people told us to.we went to go buy a heat gun.we heated up the bondo until it started feeling like rubber again.and at that point when it feels like that.we used a scraper to scrape it off.it actually worked…so i would say heat gun.but people say that it well harm the metal.i don’t know if thats true or not. it took me about 2 weeks to get my body like this
if you don’t have alot of time .i wouldn’t even do it.
and also think of why they bondo-ed it?could it be cause of it was hit or dented ? my rear quater panel where the side mouldings are were dented…i guess owner before me covered up all the accidents he had…
paint stripper from autozone/advance is only like $$3-5. And u won’t have to keep changing it. Even with a air tool this is probably the way to go. U could use 40-80 grit sandpaper as well but the stripper works fast on the end of a drill/air tool.
