Box by autotrans pedal set, what is it?

ok so im in the midle of an auto->manual swap and am wondering what this thing is. I dont have a picture, when i go out to work on it again ill get one. Basically, im pulling the pedal set and there is a box( i know general description, its obviously some electronic control module of some sort) to the left of it. Basically this box is too big to allow me to install the manual pedal set. I looked in my friends manual car and there is a similar box in the same place but it is smaller. So what im wondering is what this box does/is. I read up on shenries writeup and about all i can figure is it could be the ecu? but i thought that was on the passenger side. My other assumption is its some sort of control unit for the tranny, or possibly a cruise control unit?

Id like some insight, im gonna pull it out no matter what cause i cant get the pedals in with it in there. is there a need for this thing? should i find a way to remount this one out of the way, or should i buy one for a manual car. If i need to switch this piece out, what is it called what does it do?

everything else is pretty straight forward so far, im not sure why people say just buy manual cars instead of switching. I got the auto car for $800, still need a motor and tranny (so if anyone has anythign good wink wink, im thinking b18c1 but a guy i have some connection to is selling a b16 and tranny etc for 900 so not sure yet) motor has a bent valve and tons of miles, everythign else ive purchased for under 200 so far, so other than the headache ive recieved from taking apart the dash console and everything to get to the pedals, id say its just a bunch of work.

thanks

I did the auto to manual swap and yes it wasnt pretty. You can remove that golden box because it controls the auto trans if im not mistaken.

if it has and eyeglass like piece then its the auto tranny computer

its not particularly golden but yes it does have a little eyeglass piece with what looks like an LED behind it.

so ok… it is out now cause i was puting the pedals in today. so will i need to jump any of the terminals in the harness that connected to it? i assume no since i will be using an ECU from a manual setup.

thanks for the help

I just left the plugs there.

nope you wont have to do anything with those pigtails. the only wiring you have to mess with is running wires from the manual trans reverse switch to the auto wiring under the center consol, then you have to ground out 2 wires to be able to remove the key, and then 2 thick black wires. these let the car is either in park or neutral to start…can either splice them together and never have to press the clutch in to start it or you can run them to the clutch safety switch and the car wont start unless the clutch is pressed then. as far which wires exactly i couldnt tell you off hand but it is for sure in the 24 page write up stating exactly which wires need to be grounded, extended, etc.

should be a fun swap, did mines and loving the manual trans.

there is a 4 pin connector (with only three wire) from the key switch that activate the key interlock solenoid, just pull out the pin A. that should deactivate the solenoid. i cant remember the color coding on the wire, but its the top left wire if you’re looking at the front of the plug… this will let you take out the key. i think there is another way of doing this also, but this is how i did mines.
